Maurice and Thelma Lux, married
for five decades
Maurice W. Lux met his future wife at a church dance, and for the rest of their lives they were nearly inseparable.
Mr. Lux, 78, of Edgewood, died at 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood - 32 hours after his wife, Thelma M. Lux, died Tuesday.
Mrs. Lux had been valedictorian of her class at Holy Cross High School in Covington and was a popular girl when the couple met.
The joke in the family for years was that she had to work him into her schedule, said a son, Richard Lux of Fort Mitchell. They attended a prayer service for their first date.
Early in a marriage that would span nearly 54 years, Mrs. Lux worked in a department store. She quit when the first of the couple's three sons was born.
Mr. Lux worked as a division supervisor for Interstate Brands in Cincinnati, then later as a clerk in the Kenton County courthouse.
Perhaps because his own father died when he was 6, Mr. Lux enjoyed a close relationship with his sons, Richard Lux said.
Richard Lux remembers fondly a hear-to-heart talk with his father on the back porch of the family's home after a young lady had broken Richard's heart.
The same thing had happened to him as a young man, his father said, and "a week later I met your mother."
"Love your mother, " Mr. Lux told his son. "Always love your mother."
When he retired, Mr. Lux worked as a starter for the Kenton County Golf Course. He and Mrs. Lux went on several cruises with the Golden Age Club at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society there.
Congestive heart failure caused his health to decline, and his wife developed Alzheimer's disease.
When his sons told him their mother had died, Mr. Lux said, "Fifty-four years, " and shook his head slowly. Then he started to cry a bit, said another son, Thomas Lux of Edgewood.
Knowing that his wife had died seemed to give him "permission to let go, " Thomas Lux said.
"He really hung on for the last year, wanting to know she was taken care of, " he said.
Other survivors of the couple include a son, Stephen W. Lux of Louisville, and six grandchildren. Other survivors of Mr. Lux include sisters, Donna Lux of Fort Wright and Marianne Aloe of Cincinnati.
