Lawrence 'Judge' Kinney, educator
When Lawrence E. Kinney was a boy, his father, Joseph Kinney, nicknamed him "Judge" because he made such wise decisions.
The nickname stuck, and soon people all over Northern Kentucky got to know Judge Kinney, eith er through his baseball and basketball coaching or his educational career.
Mr. Kinney, who died Friday, taught school and coached for 18 years, first at Grant's Lick Elementary School, then at Campbell County High School where he later served as principal.
His 1958 and 1960 teams won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Championship. The 1960 team also won the Ninth Region championship.
Mr. Kinney also served as a secondary supervisor and an associate superintendent with the Cam pbell County Schools.
In 1990, he was named to the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.
When he wasn't coaching sports, he liked to fish with his brothers on Lake Norris in Tennesse e, said his daughter, Joan Sigman.
Wherever they went when she was a child, he always seemed to run into someone he knew.
"He would do anything for anyone," said Sigman, who lives in Burlington.
Mr. Kinney would take his wife, Emma Jean Kinney, shopping at the Florence Mall where he woul d frequently buy lunch for people less fortunate than himself, his son-in-law Jeff Sigman said.
Mr. Kinney was 80 years old and lived in Alexandria. He died at University Hospital in Cincin nati.
Other survivors include his daughter, Jennifer A. Kinney of Cincinnati; a sister, Florence Edwards of Grants Lick; and brothers, Gordon Kinney of Sarasota, Fla., and Harold Kinney of Edgewood.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Cold Spring.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. John Leroy Barnes, 48, of Cold Spring, died Friday at his home. He was a truck driver with Adam Wholesales, Cincinnati, a member of Carpenters Union No. 415 in Cincinnati and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Barnes; sons, John Christopher Barnes and Nathan Lee Barnes, both of Cold Spring; his mother, Dorothy Barnes of Newport; a sister, Debbie Willen of Covington; and brothers, Billy Barnes of Highland Heights and Jerry Barnes of Burlington.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Charles N. Dawson, 62, of Marbury, Ala., formerly of Union, died of cancer Thursday in Marbury.
Survivors include his wife, Kaye Dawson; sons, Chuck Dawson of Grafton, W.Va., Daniel Knotts of Marbury and Michael Knotts of Florence; daughters, Charla Lykens of Knoxville, Tenn., Jan Campbell of Grafton, and K imberly Flynn of Morning View; brothers, Paul Dawson of Walnut, Calif., and Bill Dawson of Somersville, W.Va.; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Church, Wallbach, W.Va. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, W.Va. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Wallbach.
Ron Gilliam, 50, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired self-employed drywaller.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie Gilliam of Wilmington, Ohio; his parents, Charlie and Oda Gilliam of Bellevue; sisters, Annette Dalton of Bellevue, Helen Harrison of Mount Vernon and Marina Marcum of Manches ter; and brothers, Charles Gilliam and Gillis Gilliam, both of Knoxville, Tenn., and G. A. Gilliam of Bellevue.
Services were this morning at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial was in Gilliam cemetery, Manchester. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.
Jeanett Renaker Gray, 79, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Flor ence.
She was a retired registered nurse with the T. B. Sanitorium, Covington, and a member of Walton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, John Ira Gray Jr.; sons, John Gray III of Winchester, Mike Gray and Jeff Gray, both of Florence, Dr. Dennis Gray of Louisville; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation w ill be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana . Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery. Patricia Ann Hessling, 74, of Covington, died at 4:45 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington. Her husband, Robert J. H essling, died in 1988.
Survivors include sons, Dane R. Hessl ing Sr. of Villa Hills, Paul D. Hessling of Wilder, Victor T. Hessling and Robert J. Hessling, both of Covington; a brother, William Telf ord of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

William L. Pistor Sr., 89, of Medina, Ohio, formerly of Burlington, died Saturday at Western Reserve Masonic Home in Medina. He was a development inspector with General Electric, a member of Burlington Bap tist Church and Burlington Ma sonic Lodge No. 264 F&AM and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Eileen E. Pistor, died in 2001.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Evans of Dayton, Ohio; sons, William L. Pistor Jr. of Me dina and David Warren of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Luella Miller and Violet Pistor, both of Clearwater, Fla.; 10 grandchildr en and 12 great-grandchildren.

Viola C. Robinson, 98, of Villa Hills, died at 6 p.m. Friday at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence Robinson, died in 1981.

Norbert F. Schnelle, 87, of Fort Thomas, died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Conva lescent Center, Newport. He was a retired industrial specialist with the U.S. Department of Defense in Cincinnati, and a mem ber of Siena Seniors, Fort Thomas Men's Club and National Federal of Federal Employees.

Janet Snow, 62, of Owenton, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgew ood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Stanley Snow, preceded her in death.

Clarence "Big C" Sprecher, 57, of Newport, died Wednesday at Mount Washington Care Center, Cincinnati. He was a taxi driver and a member of the Newport American Legion.
Survivors include a son, Chester Sprecher of Newport; daughters, Aileen Jo Sprecher of Newpor t and Elva Sprecher Burton of Florence; his mother, Elva Payne of Newport; a sister, Ginger Vickers of Newport; brot hers, Wes Sprecher of Newport and Ray Sprecher of Nashville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Anna Elizabeth Stewart, 95, of Crittenden, died Sunday at her home. She was a homema ker and a member of Sherman Baptist Church. Her husband, William Stewart, died in 1975.

Catherine Rita Wagenlander, 84, of Highland Heights, died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday at N orthern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a retired clerk with R.L. Polk Co., Cincinnati, and Kentucky Sales and Service in Newport. Her husband, Leo S. Wagenlander, died in 1974.
