Sister Mary Josilda, 84, educator
The sisters who live at or work out of the St. Joseph Heights Provincial House have lost their historian.
Sister Mary Josilda, S.N.D., formerly Margaret Mary Wendelken, died Sunday at Lourdes Hall in the Sisters of Notre Dame convent in Park Hills.
The 84-year-old nun had written the annals for the provincial house, and wrote a weekly newsletter for the community, Sister Mary Bankemper said.
Sister Josilda had worked in the administrative office as a secretary since 1979, when she suffered a total hearing loss and had to quit teaching.
She had previously served as a principal and teacher in the Diocese of Covington, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and in Mobile, Ala. She also taught at St. Aloysius orphanage in Cincinnati.
She read lips very well, and never let her deafness hinder her enthusiasm for and interest in the community, Sister Mary said.
"It was amazing to see the patience with which she handled this difficulty," she said.
Although all the sisters will miss her, they are all grateful that "she's able to hear now in a way she's never been able to hear before," Sister Mary said.
