J. Carter Collins, on GOP Kenton County exec board
If he had lived, J. Carter Collins probably would have run for public office, and would have made a great public official, said his friend, Greg Shumate.
Shumate chairs the executive board of the Kenton County Republican Party, which Mr. Collins served on.
"He was one of the most courageous persons I ever knew, " Shumate said. "He fought his disease with unbelievable courage. He never let it get him down."
Mr. Collins, 35, of Villa Hills, died of complications from aplastic anemia and leukemia at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jewish Hospital, Kenwood campus, Cincinnati.
One of his last public appearances was at an executive board meeting at Republican Party head quarters. "We gave him a standing ovation, " Shumate said.
Mr. Collins was too ill to attend a fund-raiser in his honor, Shumate said, held April 26 at the St. Pius X meeting hall in Edgewood.
About 500 people attended, said Mr. Collins' wife, Nancy Schrand-Collins.
Her husband watched on videotape, and was overwhelmed with everyone's generosity, she said.
Everyone thought highly of Mr. Collins, Shumate said. "He was one of those guys who, when he raises his hand and says he's going to do something, he does it, " he said.
Mr. Collins loved golf, and found an occupation in it.
He was a golf representative with Hickory Sticks Country Club in California.
He lived to fulfill a lifelong dream, his wife said - playing golf at Pebble Beach - just after Sept. 11. He shot an 82.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell.
Other survivors include his mother, Jerri Collins of Crestview Hills; a sister, Colleen Bright of Villa Hills; and a brother, T. Kelly Collins of Independence.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Arnold L. Black, 59, of Dayton, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a self-employed mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Black; daughters, Christina Black of Dayton and Carol Ziegler of Goshen, Ohio; his mother, CeleaMason of Cleveland, Tenn.; brothers, Larry Black, Robert Black and Wayne Black, all of Cleveland, Tenn.; sisters, Louise Lawson of Cleveland, Tenn., and Denna McKenzie of Erlanger; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Jean M. Furnish, 77, of Covington, died at 8:40 a.m. Monday at Vista Care Hospice Center, Cincinnati.
She was a former receptionist for Delta Airlines.
Survivors include a niece, Kathy Mocahbee Williams of Williamsburg, Ohio.
Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday at St. Benedict Church, Covington.
Burial was in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Rosemary Whitehead Lotz, 82, of Newport, died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Edward H. Lotz, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, Edward C. Lotz of Cold Spring and Paul H. Lotz of Sarasota, Fla.; sisters, Sister Mary Isabella Whitehead of Melbourne, Virginia Stenken of Fort Thomas, Ruth Baumann of Zephyr, Fla., and Bernice Hehman of Newport; a brother, Edward Whitehead of Fort Mitchell; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., with prayers at 11:30, Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Stella Lee McDowell, 91, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Jesse Lee McDowell, died in 1971. Daughters, Ann Moore and Anna Marie McDowell also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a grandson, Rick Moore of Falmouth; three great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Charles Edward Oldham Jr., 54, of Covington, died Wednesday at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash. He was a laborer.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon McPherson of Cincinnati; sisters, Rosetta Oldham-Dinkins and Joan Dace, both of Cincinnati; and brothers, Christopher Rice of Crescent Springs and Bruce Oldham of Covington.
Services will be at noon Friday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Avis Qvarnstrom, 85, of Covington, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Her husband, John Qvarnstrom, died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula Herzog of Florence; a son, Philip Qvarnstrom of Oswego, N.Y.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Phyllis Gail Wright, 68, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospice, Lexington.
She was a former employee of First National Bank of Falmouth, and a teacher with Morgan School. She was a program assistant for the Pendleton County ASC office, a member of Blanket Creek Baptist Church in Pendleton County, and the WMU and Vacation Bible School staff there.
Survivors include her husband, Alva Lee Wright; a daughter, Susan Michele Monroe of Falmouth; brothers, Paul Colvin and Richard Colvin, both of Falmouth; and a grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Blanket Creek Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Paul J. Zerhusen, 80, of Latonia, died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was an office worker with InterStar in Crescent Springs, a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Remacly Zerhusen of Latonia; a brother, George Zerhusen of Florence; and sisters, Angela Krebs of Edgewood and Laura Reimer of Independence.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright.
