George Sexton, 'man in white hat'
George W. Sexton, 73, of Newport, "the man in a white hat, " died Wednesday at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati.
Mr. Sexton, a former salesman and installer for Overhead Door Co., always wore a white hat or a white cap.
He said it made him a recognizable figure in his business and seemed to give customers confidence in him.
"It wouldn't be me without a white hat, " he once said. "You'll never see me anywhere without it."
The only exception Mr. Sexton made was church, where he removed his hat.
Mrs. Sexton's wife, Janet, who survives him, said her husband was known "more as the man in a white hat than by his name."
Mr. Sexton will be buried with his white hat.
"That will be done because that was his trademark, " said Mr. Sexton's son-in-law, Wally Pagan of Wilder. "He was the good guy in the white hat."
Pagan said Mr. Sexton had a practical reason for starting to wear a hat when he was a young man.
"He started going bald early, and he needed to keep the sun off his head, " he said. "As for white, he just liked that color of hat. He never wore any other color."
Mr. Sexton, a former resident of Fort Thomas, was a U.S. Army veteran.
One of his favorite pastimes was announcing ballgames at Vater's Ballpark in Grants Lick.
