Brian Roberts, missionary to China
Brian Lindsay Roberts, a missionary to China who grew up in Somerset, died May 1 in Qingdao, China.
He was 65.
Mr. Roberts was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and had been a civil engineer, working throughout the eastern portion of the U.S. and in South Africa. He and his wife, Katherine, raised their family in Highland and Cleveland, Ind.
"He did not get saved until he was 40 years old, " said Mrs. Roberts, when he became an evangelical Christian who yearned to share his newfound faith.
In the mid-1980s, he joined a mission movement in Tucson, Ariz. Later he and his wife moved to Guinea, West Africa, for five years with the New Tribes organization, which goes to remote areas and translates the Bible into native languages.
He helped build housing for missionaries and taught the Bible. They lived in China the past seven years.
"God gave him a gift, " Mrs. Roberts said. "He had the ability to learn languages quickly. He could read and write Chinese."
He visited hospitals and helped meet medical needs. "Every bit of his retirement and anything he made from teaching went to give to people who were sick or in need, " Mrs. Roberts said.
They worked with an agency that supplies wheelchairs and he would repair the chairs and provide additional equipment.
"One young man in China was paralyzed. We bought him a breathing machine. He considered us his parents, " she said.
Mr. Roberts recently started a group in China to carry on some of his programs - visiting hospitals, organizing home worship, repairing wheelchairs and securing medical equipment.
He called it Ai Wuh, Chinese for "Love China, Love God."
Before he died, he had spent several days at a dying woman's bedside.
He had returned home to write a service for her and make plans to travel to northwestern China, where he was considering opening a mission next year.
He died of a heart attack while waiting to leave.
Mrs. Roberts said 300 Chinese attended his funeral service in Qingdao.
