Katrina A. Amend, 104, Bellevue's oldest citizen
Katrina A. Amend started to bowl when she was 72 and stopped when she was 99 1/2. She never won any tournaments but strived to become a better bowler as she grew older.
"Her age was her average, " said Monika Veatch, a family friend and unofficial daughter to Mrs. Amend.
Mrs. Amend, Bellevue's oldest citizen, died Sunday at the age of 104.
She started bowling when her sons were active in the sport.
Family was important to her, and she had a lot of it. She left more than 100 descendants, including 37 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 6 great- great-grandchildren.
If that weren't enough, she also brought people into her family.
Veatch, who came to the United States from Germany about 40 years ago, said Mrs. Amend took her and her family into her home when Veatch was expecting her first child. Mrs. Amend, she said, felt the child would need a grand mother.
"She took us in despite the fact she had eight other children, " Veatch said. "We've been part of the family for the past 35 years."
Religion was also important to her.
Mrs. Amend credited her long life in part to her faith, said a daughter, Ruth Reinermann, of Camp Springs. People often would call her mother and ask her to remember them in her prayers, Reinermann said.
"She did everything in modera tion, " Reinermann said. "She always had a deep faith and took everything as it came."
