Robert Lee Wood, basketball coach, continued family tradition
Robert Lee Wood, the Falmouth man who died when his fishing boat capsized on May 13, was a volunteer basketball coach at Pendleton County Middle School, carrying on a family coaching tradition that started with his great-grandfather.
Mr. Wood, 24, was a graduate of Pendleton County High School, where he played basketball and baseball. He worked at Eaton Asphalt.
"He played basketball ever since he was old enough to dribble the ball, " said his father, Rick Wood of Falmouth. "He loved basketball and he loved kids.
"He had a lot of patience. He was great with kids."
Robert was Rick and Donna Wood's eldest and the most outgoing. "He never met a stranger. He was a talker, " his father said.
"I taught him to play basketball. My father was a basketball coach for years at Pendleton County High School and coached me. My grand- father was my father's coach."
Robert Wood was teaching his son the game. Divorced, he had joint custody of his 4-year-old son, Hunter Wood of Mount Auburn, Cincinnati.
"He went to church every Sunday and took his little boy with him, " Rick Wood said.
Robert Wood also enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He was fishing with two friends in the Ohio River near Meldahl Locks and Dam on May 13 when their 15-foot aluminum boat overturned about 3:30 p.m.
One friend was rescued by a pass ing towboat. Mr. Wood drowned and his friend, Danny Eaton of West Berry, is believed to have drowned. Mr. Wood's body was found Thursday.
"We thought we were prepared for that, but we weren't, " said his father. "Our biggest concern now is to get the other boy out. They were friends. They were together. We care about him like he was family."
Mr. Wood attended Oakland Christian Church.
