Jim Glass, respected coach
Jim W. Glass, 60, of Owenton, a highly successful and respected high school track coach, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
For 25 years, until his retirement in 1996, Mr. Glass coached runners at Owen County High School who fared extremely well in regional and state competition in track and cross country. Several of his athletes were state champions.
Mr. Glass was inducted into the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992. He also founded the Kentucky Komets Amateur Athletic Union track club.
"Over 25 years, I think he had at least one individual or team qualify for the state meet every year in both track and cross country, " said Mr. Glass' daughter, Robin McGuire of Glencoe.
Mrs. McGuire said she was coached by her father and knows why he was so successful.
"He believed so much in all the kids who ran for him, " she said. "When he believed in you, you couldn't help but believe in yourself.
"He expected an awful lot of his runners and his runners did everything they could so they wouldn't disappoint him and wouldn't disappoint themselves.
