Margaret Bosse, saved town as mayor from being annexed
Margaret Bosse, one of the first women mayors in Northern Kentucky, died Thursday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. She was 84.
Mrs. Bosse was a longtime Democratic campaigner who became a candidate when annexation threatened her tiny town of Latonia Lakes in 1974. She served eight years as chairman of the 500-resident town's board of trustees and in 1981 was elected mayor when state law changed the trustee government to a mayor and council.
"Covington wanted to annex the city, and she wanted to help it stay a city, " said her daughter, Helen Vincent of Independence. Mrs. Bosse gathered petitions door-to-door and kept the town alive.
She was a Girl Scout leader, managed a softball team, bowled, was a tireless campaign worker and worked nearly 16 years as a receptionist at the Palm Beach Co.
"She was outspoken and always the life of the party, " said her daughter. Gatherings usually included her breaking into a rousing rendition of "Bill Bailey."
Her husband, Al, died in 1975. Their home was a gathering place for their children's friends, who called her "Aunt Margaret."
When Mrs. Vincent's husband died in 1983, Mrs. Bosse moved in with her to help care for Mrs. Vincent's daughter while she worked.
Mrs. Bosse helped organize the Women of Moose in Covington and the first Women's Auxiliary of the Oak Ridge Fire Department.
"If she saw something that needed to be done, she did it, " her daughter said.
Mrs. Bosse was a member of Taylor Mill Church of Christ, St. Patrick Church Irish Rovers, Covington Moose Lodge No. 985 and Staffordsburg Homemakers.
She traveled to every state in the union, mostly on Senior Citizen tours.
She moved to the Colony retirement center in Latonia in December and moved to Rosedale Manor six weeks ago when her health started to decline.
