Valera Herzog, 90, ballerina
Valera Herzog, 90, of Fort Wright, a professional ballerina on the New York stage who later taught dancing in Covington, died Saturday at her home.
A native of Latonia, Mrs. Herzog attend ballet school in Cincinnati as a youngster and was so good that at the age of 15 she went to New York, accompanied by her mother, to continue her training and launch a professional career.
She performed in musicals, including "Guys and Dolls" on Broadway. "But her father was injured in a railroad accident and she returned home with her mother, " said Mrs. Herzog's daughter, Valera Koester of Villa Hills.
"She opened the Valera School of Dance in downtown Covington and taught ballet and tap dancing to the children of Northern Kentucky."
The students performed an annual revue at Covington Holmes High School, where Mrs. Herzog met her future husband, Elmer Herzog, who died in 1981. Mr. Herzog founded Herzog Jewelers in Covington. The business is now located in Fort Mitchell.
Mrs. Herzog was a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright.
Other survivors include daughters Patricia Roenker and Eileen Herzog, both of Fort Wright; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow.
Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Eugene F. Bailey, 80, of Latonia, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Betty Jean Beil, 73, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Burlington Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Henry L. Beil, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Beil-Morgan of Okeana, Ohio; sons, Gordon Beil of Walton and William Beil of Florence; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Michael Wayne Burden, 27, of Ludlow, died Saturday at Camp Love, Big Bone, Boone County in a fire. He was a concrete installer with All Star Concrete Co.
Survivors include his wife, Shannon Lowry Burden; a daughter, Covina Rose Burden of Ludlow; his parents, Wayne Burden of Vero na and Robin Garcia of Dayton; brothers, Jason Burden and Elvis Burden, both of Dayton, and James Burden of Verona; a sister, Gwendolyn Burden of Verona; and grandparents, Judy Kennedy of Cold Spring, Jose and Toncia Domingez of Elsmere and Janett Elam of Verona.

Nancy Cassedy, 72, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Erlanger, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, William A. Cassedy Jr. and Mike Cassedy, both of Burlington; a daughter, Catherine A. Prebles of West Chester, Ohio; a brother, John McCormick of Maple City, Mich.; a sister, Mary Rench of Tulsa, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Christeen Cook Ely, 84, of Florence, died Friday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a housekeeper with Ramada and Wildwood Inn hotels. Her husband, James Ely, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Robert Pope Sr. of Florence and Clifford Smith of Geneva, Ind.; sisters, Hazel Moller of Elsmere and Mary Powell of Palm Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

JoAnn Gehrich, 73, of Pryor, Okla., formerly of Covington, died Friday in Pryor. She was a member of St. Mark Church, Pryor.
Survivors include a sister, Rita McCall of Pryor; nieces and nephews.

Maude Reynolds Goins, 86, of Latonia, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
She was a retired seamstress with Safe Guard Manufacturing Co., Covington, and formerly with Gordon's Food Manufacturing Co. and Rauh Shirt Co., both of Cincinnati. She was also a former housekeeper with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington, and a member of the Northern Kentucky Women's Democrat Club. Her husband, Edred William Goins, died in 1958.
Survivors include a son, Carl L. Goins of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Jo Ann E. Baird, Sue Goins and Linda Winia, all of Covington, and Roma Stacey of Latonia; a brother, Simon Reynolds of Bethel, Ohio; a sister, Aileen Miller of Niceville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Linda Roberts Greifenkamp, 65, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Latonia, died Friday in a automobile accident in Cincinnati. She was a retired X-ray technician at several local hospitals and member of Holy Spirit Church, Latonia. Her husband, Maurice F. Greifenkamp, died in 2000.
Survivors include sons, Marc F. Greifenkamp of New Richmond, Ohio, Thomas E. Greifenkamp of Pleasant Ridge, Ohio, Sean W. Greifenkamp and Scott A. Greifenkamp, both of Loveland; a daughter, Anne R. Greifenkamp of Loveland; and two grandchildren.

John A. Hoersting, 82, of Lakeside Park, died at 12:35 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a tool engineer with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere, Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, and the Ford Golf Team. He was a past winner of the Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens Golf Championship and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Ida F. Hudgins, 87, of Maysville, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday at her home. She was a secretary with Maysville High School and a member of First Christian Church in Maysville. She was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship at the church. Her husband, Franklin T. "Red" Hudgins, died in 1978.
Survivors include daughters, Ginny Ellington of Owenton and Judy Carpenter of Carlisle; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Sylvia Wells Lane, 91, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at her home. She was a nurses aide with Dry Ridge Pentecostal Care and a member of Hewett Methodist Church in Hewett, W.Va. Her husband, Samuel Lane, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Virginia Sallee of Dry Ridge and Shelvey Jean Duty of Foster; a son, Roger Lane of Norwalk, Ohio; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Angela M. Leising, 83, of Fort Thomas, died at 9:40 a.m. Saturday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas, and Club 55. A daughter, Linda Leising, died in 2001.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Leising; a son, Michael Leising of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Marlene Snodgrass of Cold Spring; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph K. Westermeyer, 74, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired crew chief with American Airlines, a member of St. Paul Church in Florence and the Vanguards with American Airlines and Florence Lions Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
