Ruth McElhinney, 87, major symphony booster

Ruth Evelyn Ludwigson McElhinney, a major booster of the Cincinnati Symphony and numerous other cultural, charitable and civic causes across the region, died at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas .
She was 87.

Mrs. McElhinney, of Fort Thomas, got involved in the 1960s with the symphony after supporters of the organization went looking for help in Northern Kentucky. She organized a committee to sel l tickets and was so successful that in 1966, she became the first Kentuckian elected president of the symphony's Women's Committee.

She opened her home to the orchestra's new, 31-year-old conductor, Erich Kunzel.

"He became like the sixth member of our family, he was at our house so long, " said Thomas McElhinney of Covington, a son. "Erich didn't have any brothers, so he became our brother."

Mrs. McElhinney was a past president of the Covington Old Ladies Home board, a former chair of the United Cerebral Palsy Guild's Cotton Ball and a member of the Northern Kentucky Branch of the YMCA, the Holly Hill Protestant Children's Home Guild, the Cincinnati Woman's Club and the T own Club.

Before she got active in community work, she ran the tea room at Shillito's.

She attended the universities of Minnesota and Iowa.

Other survivors include her husband, Dr. Thomas McElhinney; a daughter, Ann Kirlin of Laguna Beach, Calif.; sons, Peter McElhinney of Independence, Robert McElhinney of Hudson, Ohio, and Mark McElhinney of Dayton; and 14 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Friday. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co. Memorials are suggested to McAtee Scholarship Fund, 321 Riverside Dr., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Carl F. Black, 66, of Union, died Wednesday at his home. He was a furnace assembler with Williamson Heating, a deacon at Big Bone Baptist Church in Union and a member of the board of Bi g Bone Baptist cemetery in Union. He was a Sunday school teacher and an usher at Big Bone Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Black; sons, David Black and Douglas Black, both of Union; a brother, M.L. "Mel" Black of Florence; sisters, Betty Chipman and Connie Clinkenbeard, both of Walton, and Gail Roberts of Warsaw; and a grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Big Bone Baptist Church. Visitation will be at 5 t o 8 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Big Bone Baptist Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Big Bone Baptist Church Building Fund, 11036 Big Bone Church Road, Union, Ky. 41091; or Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Carl Edward Brockman, 54, of Maysville, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a disabled Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Brockman; a son, Eddie Brockman; sisters, Judy Kirby an d Beth Craycraft, both of Maysville; brothers, Frank Simpson and Robert Simpson, both of Maysville, William Simpson of Brooksville; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.

Dorothy Ann Combs, 81, of Erlanger, died at 6:30 a.m. April 11 at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired nurse's aide.

Survivors include a son, Dusty H. Combs of Tennessee; daughters, Barbara Moore of Elsmere, Ji ll Runion of Crescent Springs, Elizabeth Van Cleve of Lawrenceburg and Micky Burns of Redford, Mich .; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.

Anna Bell Woods Duncan, 85, of Falmouth, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Dorothy Litteral Erkenbrecher, 87, of Walton, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Cente r South, Edgewood.

She was a retired teacher with Cincinnati Public Schools. Her husband, Arthur Frank, died in 1980. A stepson, Donnie Erkenbrecher, died in 1999.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Sosnowski of Micanopy, Fla., Virginia Chapman of Warsaw, Ind., Billie Mitchell of Erlanger and Martha Jo Vickery of Walton; a stepdaughter, Shirley Warne r of McKee; stepsons, Edward "Sonny" Erkenbrecher of Batavia, Ohio, and Wendell Erkenbrecher of Irvine; a sister, Della Litteral of Micanopy; a brother, James Ray Williams of Rennselaer, Ind.; 30 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

James O. Foley, 58, of Woodbridge, Va., died Saturday at his home. He was a retired lieutenant commander with the Navy and a member of Havens Chapel Methodist Church, Washington.

Survivors include his mother, Ethel Boulden Foley of Maysville; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.

Robert French, 78, of Mays Lick, died at 1:48 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired foreman with Wald Manufacturing Co., Maysville, a member of Calvary Temple, Maysville, and an Ar my veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene French; sons, Alan French and Tom French, both of Maysville; a sister, Ida Mae Worthington of Plumville; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Maysville.

Irvin Goines, 68, of Newport, died Tuesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Trauth of Alexandria.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Jean Smith Losito, 89, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.

She was owner of Beauty Bazaar Studio, Ludlow, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. She was an air raid warden during World War II, an accomplished violin player and a memb er of the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati hairdresser associations. Her husband, Leonard Losito, died in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Voelker Savage of Fort Wright; a brother, Daniel Smith of Union; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Woodcrest Manor, 3876 Turkeyfoot Road, Elsmere, Ky. 41018.

Delores Meadors, 63, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, John Meadors; daughters, Theresa D. Maskrey of Chicago and Tin a Johnson of Toledo, Ohio; a son, John Joseph Meadors of Alexandria; sisters, Betty Ann Summers of Norwood, Ohio, Phyliss Beverly of Keithsburg, Ill., and Mary Konstandenous of Goshen, Ohio; brothers, Lenzie Klyde Davidson of Batesville, Ind., Herbert Gene Davidson of Easley, S.C., and Ronald Wayne Davidson of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Meadors Family Cemetery, Campbell County.

Rose Ratliff, 79, of Fort Thomas, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired nurse's aide at VA Medical Center, Fort Thomas. A son, Ronald Ratliff, died in 2000.

Survivors include daughters, Denise Ratliff of Newport, Wilma Ratliff of Covington and Linda Piccirillo of Alexandria; sons, William Ratliff of Erlanger, Dennis Ratliff of Newport and Alan Ratliff of Fort Thomas; a brother, Alfred Belcher of Dorton; sisters, Hattie Bentley and Isa Huston, both of Dorton, Margie Moses of Richmond, Va., Opal Robertson of Dover, Del., and Thelma Ripley of Sandstone, Va.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephe n Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Pauline Wilson Schomaker, 80, of Centerville, Ohio, died Thursday at Oak Creek Terrace, Kettering, Ohio. Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Sister Mary Regina, S.N.D., formerly Loretta O. Black, 86, of Park Hills, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Sisters of Notre Dame convent, Villa Hills. She was a retired librarian with the Diocese of Covington and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Survivors include brothers, Robert Black, William Black and Paul Black, all of Ohio; and sisters, Mary Dyer of Ohio and Theresa Thomas of Georgia.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the convent chapel. Visitation will b e from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the convent Provincial House. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the convent cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Sisters of Notre Dame, 1601 Dixie Highway, Park Hills, Ky. 41011. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Otto Siegrist, 89, of Fort Wright, died at 1 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired home builder and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Ruth Siegrist, died in 1948.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary Siegrist of Hebron; sons, Gary Siegrist of Fort Wright and Ronald Siegrist of Florida; sisters, Leona Schmidt of Coldwater, Ohio, Barbara Kruetzans of Fort Wright and Imelda Wilkes of St. Mary, Ohio; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
