Evelyn Lyon, 98, first Girl Scout council president
Evelyn Lyon, first president of the Licking Valley Girl Scout Council and a mentor to scout organizers and students, died Friday at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills.
She was 98.
Mrs. Lyon was a member of the Cincinnati Yoga Teachers Association, the Mental Health Association of Northern Kentucky, St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright and a volunteer with the Children's Psychiatric Hospital.
She had an energy and verve that belied her petite frame, and she believed just about anything was possible with effort.
She instilled confidence in her Girl Scouts and her scout leaders, just as she did in her own children and grandchildren, said her granddaughter, Kathy Eubanks, of Felicity, Ohio.
"I don't think I ever heard her raise her voice to anybody, " Ms. Eubanks said.
"She always had something nice to say. If you ever needed to be lifted up, you just had to spend some time with her.
Mrs. Lyon was a health food and nutrition advocate with a weakness for ice cream and tradition. Sunday family dinners on her screened-in porch in Park Hills included chicken, corn on the cob and listening to the Reds on the radio.
Her yard was bright with flowers, and she always had a project in the works. She visited elementary and high schools to teach yoga. She taught her grandchildren how to sew.
And if anyone needed help, she was an enthusiastic volunteer.
Her unwavering faith was a source of strength to herself and her family.
"In adverse times, her faith was her strength, " Mrs. Eubanks said. "Her son and daughter-in-law died in the Beverly Hills fire. Her grandson died of cancer."
A son, James Lyon, died in 1977.
Mrs. Lyon and her husband, former Covington city manager, state park designer and Edgewood city engineer George Lyon Sr., raised three sons.
