Edward Fausz, artist, teacher, missionary
When Edward William Fausz, 80, of Harrison, Ohio, died Monday, he had done enough living for three men.
The child of German immigrants grew up in Newport, and didn't learn English until he went to school. His father abused him, and beat him once for being clumsy when he tripped over an iron and burned himself.
Far from leaving him bitter, that experience only made him determined to treat his own children better, said his daughter, Debbie Dowdy, of Huntsville, Ala.
A gifted cartoonist as a teen-ager, he turned down an offer to work for Walt Disney.
Even in his old age, he was in demand as a caricaturist for birthday parties.
His wife, Mary, often fussed at him for doodling on napkins and placemats at restaurants.
His fluency in German made him much in demand during World War II, where he served in Europe as a radio operator. He liked to confuse the enemy with false messages.
He served on General Eisenhower's headquarters staff in Luxembourg. During the Battle of the Bulge, he transmitted an order from Ike to British Field Marshal Montgomery to cut off the German Army. He had three transmitters shot out from under him while doing so.
After the war, Mr. Fausz earned a ministerial degree from Cincinnati Bible College, then received a master's degree from Great Lakes Bible College in 1953.
He returned to Luxembourg in 1956, where he served as a missionary for the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ and as an evangelist on Radio Luxembourg, which was then Europe's most powerful radio station.
"He touched thousands of people as far as winning them to Christ, " said son-in-law Don Dowdy. "He would get a cluster of radio listeners behind the Iron Curtain and get them talking to each other and start under ground churches."
Mrs. Dowdy remembers her father hiding pocket Bibles in boxes of rice and mailing them to East Germany.
"Sometime later we would get a letter saying 'We had rice for supper, and it was really good, "' she said.
He returned to America in 1974, and in his later years taught at the Christ Centered School in Harrison.
His last drawing was a chalk sketch of Christ on the cross that he couldn't finish because he was too weak.
He kept his sense of humor to the end, however. One of the last things he asked his daughter was if she had heard about the Olympic medalist so proud of his gold medal that he had it bronzed.
Surviving besides his daughter are his wife; sons, David E. Fausz of Cincinnati and Robert W. Fausz of Harri son; sisters, Anna Ziegler of Latonia and Thelma Lucas of Alexandria; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
