Wendell Rice, learned to cope with handicap
For the last 19 years of his life, Wendell "Wendy" Rice never spoke a word above a whisper.
Mr. Ryle, who died Wednesday at the age of 69, had his entire voice box removed in 1983 because of throat cancer, said his wife, Shirley Burns Ryle. He breathed through an open hole in his throat.
He learned how to speak using his esophagus, and decided not to use electronic devices to help because they made his voice sound like a robot's.
Family and friends could understand him, but strangers often didn't. It didn't embarrass him or hurt his feelings to communicate with them using pencil and paper, Ms. Ryle said.
He also never let his handicap keep him from doing what he wanted to do, she said.
But the cancer did force him to retire from his job as a ground service worker for American Airlines, which he held for 26 years, because of the fumes he had to breathe.
Mr. Ryle learned his trade in the Air Force, where he served for four years as a mechanic during the Korean conflict.
He grew up in Rabbit Hash, and later moved to Petersburg.
