Lois Ogden Sutherland, 81, Post sportswriter, professor
Sixty years ago, the number of women working professionally outside the home was few, and fewer still was the number working in male-dominated fields like sports reporting.
In Cincinnati, Lois Ogden Sutherland was one of the exceptions. The then twenty-something journalist didn't let the odds keep her out of the game as a staff sports reporter for The Cincinnati Post and Times-Star.
"She really believed in women going as far as they could, yet she always made sure we had a good home life, " said Mrs. Sutherland's daughter, Mary Nell Boeckman of Wilder. "She was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She said our education was the most important thing."
Lois Ogden Sutherland, 81, of California, died Friday morning at Saint Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
The emphasis she placed on education with her own children was demonstrated tangibly in her professional life as well. Mrs. Sutherland became a journalism and communications professor at Northern Kentucky University for 25 years, at one time serving as chair of the school's communications department.
"She was one of the original faculty back when it was still a community college in Park Hills, " said a former NKU student, Karen Ware, who now also works at the Highland Heights university.
"Today I feel like I've lost my mom all over again. All her students felt so very close to her. It has hit the university community very hard, too."
In her teaching at the university, as well as at Campbell County, Alexandria and Holmes High schools, Mrs. Sutherland always sprinkled her lessons with real life experience.
"She always said she was the first person in greater Cincinnati to know Franklin Roosevelt h ad died because she was working at the time, and had been idly standing at the tele-type machine that day . . . when all of a sudden it started typing out the words, 'The president is dead, ' " recalls Ms. Ware. "I don't know how to explain it - she just brought excitement about the profession to her students."
Mrs. Sutherland earned a bachelor's degree from University of Kentucky and her master's fr om Xavier University. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of Women in Communications.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sutherland.
Besides her daughter, survivors include two sons, Tom and Scott Sutherland, both of California; a sister, Alice Lou Ogden, of Covington; and four grandchildren.
