Margaret O'Donnell, Navy wife
A good Navy wife travels from port to port with her husband and keeps family traditions alive, even when her husband is away at sea for months at a time, Richard O'Donnell said.
His wife, Margaret Jean Matthews O'Donnell, made "one hell of a fine Navy wife, and a fine wife to retire with, " he said.
Mrs. O'Donnell, 76, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence, after a brief illness.
When her husband was at sea, she always set a place for him at the family table. Each of their seven children would take turns sitting at that place of honor.
Even with her family responsibilities, Mrs. O'Donnell found time to volunteer for others.
During her husband's 20-year Navy career, she spent one day a week with the Navy Relief Society, counseling enlisted men about debt problems or finding ways to help them financially.
When her husband retired from the service in 1976, they moved to West Virginia, where he served as an ordained deacon in the Catholic church. She tutored school children in reading and continued that practice when they moved to Florence in 1992.
She later volunteered with Reading Services of Cincinnati, interviewing the blind to find out what help they needed.
"She always had something to give, " Mr. O'Donnell said. "And she gave her husband a ration every day."
