Maria Catalano, 97, seamstress

Maria Catalano was nearly 60 when she moved here from Italy.

"She never learned the language except 'thank you' and 'goodbye' and little greetings like that, " said a granddaughter, Loretta Lucarelli of Villa Hills.

"But she always thought this was the land of opportunity."

Mrs. Catalano died Thursday morning at her home in Crescent Springs. She was 97.

Mrs. Catalano was a native of the Italian city of San Chirico in the province of Potenza.

Her husband, Vincenzo Catalano, died in 1932, after they were married seven years, and she never remarried.

Instead, she single-handedly reared Mrs. Lucarelli's mother and two uncles.

Mrs. Catalano moved to the Cincinnati area in 1961, after her sons and before her daughter.

A tailor and seamstress, Mrs. Catalano worked first in a clothing store and then in a factory that made men's clothing.

When she retired, "She stayed home and took care of me and my siblings when our parents went to work, " said Mrs. Lucarelli.

'When I got married and went back to work when my daughter was 3 months old, she baby-sat my little girl and then baby-sat all the other grandkids as well."

She was tough, but taught her offspring respect and self-discipline, Mrs. Lucarelli said.

"She had a very strong work ethic, and she was a very loving woman."

Mrs. Catalano liked to garden. "From tomatoes to peppers to peach trees to basil - you name it, she grew it, " said Mrs. Lucarelli.

Mrs. Catalano liked to knit and crochet.

"To this day every one of her grandchildren - who range from age 25 down to age 7 - still have socks that she knitted for them, " said Mrs. Lucarelli.

"She also crocheted blankets, and everybody has a blanket she crocheted as well."

Mrs. Catalano belonged to Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell. Her son, John Catalano, died in 2000.

In addition to Mrs. Lucarelli, Mrs. Catalano is survived by a son, Ralph Catalano of Fort Wright; a daughter, Filomena Palmieri-DiLonardo of Crescent Springs; eight other grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
