George Gasper, painter, semi-pro baseball player
George Gasper's friends knew him as a taciturn man, which is why they tagged him with the nickname "Gabby."
He saved his talking for the pitcher's mound, where his competitive fire would come out.
"He got very angry if the umpire didn't call a strike when he wanted one, " said his widow, Marian Fangman Gasper.
Mr. Gasper, of Park Hills, died at 2:29 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
He played semi-professional baseball in the late 1920s and early 1930s for teams such as the Goldenrods and Siebler's Tailors in Cincinnati. One of his teams won the world amateur championship in Cleveland, his widow said.
He was rejected by the Cincinnati Reds because he was too short - about 5-feet-7, she said. But he did make it into the North ern Kentucky Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Gasper was a retired painter with the Covington Traffic Department and a mem ber of St. John Church in Covington.
Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Elaine Masters of Arlington, Tex as; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Wednes day.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Cov ington, Ky. 41011.

Amanda Aylor, 79, of Florence, died Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Elsmere Church of Christ. Her husband, Robert Lawrence Aylor, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert L. Aylor of Florence; a sister, Lillie Erpenbeck of Erlanger; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Yarnell Paris Bess, 50, of Maysville, died Monday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was a coal handler at East Kentucky Power.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Whiteman Bess, Maysville; son, Jamie Bess, Brooksville; daughters, Michelle Bess, Germantown, Melissa Daring, Aberdeen, Ohio; Tisha Hesler, Windham, Ohio; Angela Ginn, Maysville and Sarah Ginn, Maysville; brothers, Delvin Bess and Omar "Sonny" Bess, both of Maysville and Bill Bess, Brooksville; eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Yarnell Bess Family.
Mary Angela Kampsen Wolfe Bessey, 93, of Fort Mitchell, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a hair stylist with Belvedere Apartments. Her first husband, George E. Wolfe, died in 1941. Her second husband, Wallace A. Bessey, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Joyce Neff of Fort Mitchell and Lois Avery of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Richard Douglas Burdett, 78, of Union, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired instrumentation engineer with GE Aircraft, a former Boy Scout leader and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Burdett; sons, Steven Burdett of Jacksonville, Fla., and Daniel Burdett of Union; daughters, Ann King of Union and Alisa Burdett of Georgetown, Ohio; a brother, Fred Burdett of Appleton, Wis.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Haydn Phillip Davies, 98, of Lakeside Park, died at 6:55 p.m. Friday at Villa Springs, Erlanger. He was a retired ordering clerk with AT&T; in New Jersey, a former musician with his own band, and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington, Grand Lodge of New Jersey and Musicians Guild of Essex County, N.J.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Simon Davies.

Patrick Louis Donoghue, 45, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a forklift operator for Duro Bag Manufacturing Co.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Roesel; daughters, Lori Smith and Marcia Arcaro, both of Metamora, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Michele Roe sel of Florence; brothers, Michael Donoghue and Kevin Donoghue, both of Cincinnati, and Brian Donoghue of Alexandria; a sister, Peggy Chalk of Southgate; four grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

Hazel Fink, 78, of Covington, died at 1:19 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Fink, died in 1986.
Survivors include a son, Eddie Carr of Covington; daughters, Deborah Koger of Covington and Audrey Fuller of Florence; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Sister Mary Matthew Forman, C.D.P., 79, of Melbourne, died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence, and worked in the dietary departments of seminaries in Washington and Maryland, St. Pius X in Erlanger and St. Anne Convent, Melbourne.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Sievers of Lakeland, Fla.; and a brother, John Forman of Arcadia, Fla.

Thomas D. Gillenwater, 83, of Newport, died at 6:56 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired insurance agent with Western-Southern Life Insurance Co., Fort Thomas, and a courier with Fort Thomas-Bellevue Bank, Fort Thomas. His wife, Marie Welsch Gillenwater, died in 1991.
Survivors include daughters, Judy LaFace of Indianapolis, Bonnie Scott of Crittenden and Marilyn Mirick of Florence; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Gail Hedge, 67, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Sunday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati. Her husband, Harry O. Hedge, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Toby Williamson of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, James P. Williamson of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a granddaughter and two step-grandchildren.

Robert L. Hisle, 66, of Crestview, died at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired self-employed salesman.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby M. Hisle; a son, Robert J. Hisle of Erlanger; a daughter, Aloma Kay Pace of Middletown, Ohio; brothers, Gene Hisle of Dry Ridge and Edgar Hisle of Hamburg, Ind.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

James R. Kinmon, 82, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a farmer and a truck driver for Ace Doran Trucking Co. and Myers Construction Co. He served in the Army in World War II, and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Grassy Run Baptist Church in Williamstown.
His wife, Lily Mae Simpson Kinmon died in 1978. Sons Jimmy Kinmon died in 1954, Kenneth G. Kinmon died in 1996 and John W. Kinmon died in 2000. A daughter Frances Rae Powell died in 1989. A brother, Louis Burton Kinmon died in 1997.
Survivors include sons Charles "Scooter" Kinman, Williamstown and Keith Kinmon, Dry Ridge; daughters Janet Howe, Carol Ann Rhoton and Dorothy Ryan, all of Dry Ridge; a brother, Junior Kinman, Williamstown; sisters Jo Taylor, Dry Ridge and Mildred Dunn, Williamstown; 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Roger Oldham, 76, of Florence, died at 8:01 p.m. on Monday at the Villaspring Health Care Center in Erlanger.

Raymond C. Oldiges Sr., 55, of Okeechobee, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Feb. 25 at Columbia Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee. He was a lineman with Floral Power & Light Co., a member of the Okeechobee VFW Post and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi "Timmie" Bohart Oldiges; a son, Raymond C. Oldiges Jr. of Ireland Heights; a daughter, Jeanne Ann Mainville of Hollywood, Fla.; and a brother, Robert Oldiges of Bellevue.

Parthenia Perkins, 94, of Warsaw, died at 2:10 a.m. Sunday at Gallatin County Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a homemaker and a member of Warsaw Baptist Church. Her husband, Elmer Perkins, died in 1980. A daughter, Betty Reynolds, died Jan. 21.

Stanley Clay Rose, 79, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Grand Haven Nursing Home, Cynthiana. He was a farmer, a member of Old Union Christian Church, Bourbon County, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Sue Rose of Lexington; sisters, Lucille Komara of Cincinnati, Lelia Dorda and Juanita Pascal, both of Ypsilanti, Mich., Billie Wells of Georgetown and Wanda T. King of Berry; and a granddaughter.

Robert Leroy Scott, 71, of Dayton died Monday at his residence.
He was a foreman at United Trucking Co. in Cincinnati, an Army Veteran in the Korean War and attended the Lawler- Hanlon VFW Post in Newport. He also was a former bartender at the Loyal Cafe in Bellevue.

Melissa Ann "Missy" Spanier, 19, of Erlanger, died at 10:21 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was an employee of Barnes and Noble in Florence and worked with children at Little Red School House in Erlanger.

Eugene Kenneth "Ken" Whalen, 79, of Park Hills, died at 8 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a retired personnel director with DuBois Chemical Co. and founder of Quality Insurance Inc., Florence. He was a member of the Covington Rotary Club and Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park, where he served on several boards. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Mike Whalen of Florence and Greg Whalen of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Julie Comerford of Bloomington, Ind.; a brother, Allen Whalen of Paris; and five grandchildren.
