Ralph Zempter, 100, dairy, tobacco farmer

When asked the secret of his long life, Joseph Ralph Zempter would reply, "Two eggs, bacon, one cup of coffee and one cigarette a day."

Zempter, who died Saturday at 100 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, had fixed that breakfast every morning at his home in Falmouth - the same house where he was born on Sept. 30, 1901.

Mr. Zempter grew up on the farm which his grandfather, Heinrich Zempter, bought in 1868. He ran it primarily as a dairy and tobacco operation.

A very detail-oriented man, Mr. Zempter kept books showing to the penny how much he had earned and how much he spent, said his pastor, the Rev. Donna Jones.

Mr. Zempter joined Falmouth United Methodist Church in 1931, and attended every Sunday until his health declined, she said.

He continued to do chores, work on his tractor and drive his truck until August, when he en tered a personal care home, said his niece-in-law, Peggy Browning.

Mr. Zempter kept his sharp wit and his memory until just about a week before his death, said the Rev. Jones.

One of the last things he told her then, when he had become a little disoriented, was to give his love to Mary, his late wife, whom he had nursed when she became bedridden. She died in 1994.

"He loved his wife very much. He talked about her all the time, " Rev. Jones said.

Mr. Zempter was a former chairman of the board of the Farmers Home Administration and a former director, secretary and treasurer of the Pendleton County Farmers Fire Insurance Co. He was a state director of the Artificial Breeders Association, a charter member of the Farm Bu reau and a district inspector with the Kentucky Department of Mo tor Transport.
