Marshall Neikirk, had 'big heart'

Marshall Norman Neikirk was the official father of four children - and the unofficial father of countless others.

He greeted each day with what a son described as a "great big heart."

Mr. Neikirk, 68, of Lexington, died Saturday at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington after 12 days in intensive care.

Mr. Neikirk was the father of Mark Neikirk, of Crescent Springs, managing editor of The Kentucky Post and The Cincinnati Post.

An Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Neikirk was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He also worked for Keeneland and the University of Kentucky athletics department.

"The most important thing to know about my dad is he just had this great big heart, " said Mark Neikirk.

"There were four of us, and we all thought, 'He's our dad.' I've got cousins who think he's their father or grandfather."

Mr. Neikirk was one of 10 children whose own father died while some of his sib lings were quite young.

"They (the younger siblings) might as well count him as their father, " Mark said of his father. "He was real important to a lot of people."

Mr. Neikirk grew up in Irvine and raised his family there.

"He taught us to love baseball, to love the Bible, and to love a poker game, not because it's a poker game, but because of the friends who were at the table, " his son said.

"Going back home to Ir vine meant seeing family, playing ball, going to church, having people over all the time. It was a big, open household where the doors were never locked."

Mr. Neikirk had a heart attack in 1995 while return ing from a trip to Washing ton, D.C., to see the Korean War Veterans Memorial. Three months later he was diagnosed with cancer.

"Those last seven years he taught us how to be sick and not act like it, " Mark Neikirk said.

Kentucky Post readers met Marshall Neikirk through the words of his son, Mark, who in 1999 wrote about his father's long and courageous battle with cancer.

"Angry to be a patient, he set his mind on going home, " his son wrote. "I won't show him this column because he would be shy about so many people know ing of his struggle."
