Arlis E. Lyon overcame heart attack, built firm

When Arlis E. "Red" Lyon had a major heart attack in 1974, his wife, Marjorie, begged God for help. He was only 40 years old, and they had children to raise.

God answered the prayer, Ms. Lyon said, by giving her husband another 28 years.

Lyon, 68, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South after an extended bout with lung cancer.

The Lyons rose to the occasion after the 1974 heart attack changed their lives.

The attack incapacitated Mr. Lyon for several months. When a doctor finally cleared him to return to his former job in the heating/air conditioning business, he no longer had a job.

The layoff hurt the family financially. They earned a little money and kept themselves busy by making planters for neighbors, with Ms. Lyon mixing the concrete.

"We've always been like hands-on people, " she said.

Finally, in 1976, they decided to start their own business - A & A Sheet Metal Products Inc. in Ludlow. "At that time, I said I thought I felt a little like the people who went West felt" because it was such a big adventure, Ms. Lyon said.

The business succeeded and made a steady living for the Lyons and their children. Two of their sons and a brother-in-law now run the shop, and Ms. Lyon still keeps the books.

Her husband felt well enough Thursday to stop by the shop and pick up some paperwork for her. He also stopped for lunch at a favorite restaurant in Ludlow.

"Our life has had so many blessings, " Ms. Lyon said. "I just wasn't ready for it to end."
