Virgil Hogan, steelworker, carpenter, loved retirement
For the last 20 years of his life, Virgil Hogan of Independence liked nothing better than to sit on the porch, feel the sun on his face and listen to bluegrass music.
"He was mellow, " said a son, Norman L. Hogan of Independence.
The elder Hogan had earned the time off, after decades of work at Newport Steel and as a self-employed carpenter. His legacy: helping to build some 40 houses in Northern Kentucky - many of them on Sylvan Drive and Cadillac Drive in Independence.
Mr. Hogan died Saturday at St. Luke Hos pital West in Florence. He was 84.
Mr. Hogan was reared in Beattyville.
He was a hot roller for Newport Steel off and on for about a dozen years until, accord ing to his son, "He got tired of being laid off."
So the elder Mr. Hogan, who had worked part-time as a carpenter, took it up full-time, constructing homes. He retired when he was 62.
"He was one of those men who liked to work, and when he retired, he was one of those men who liked it when he retired, " said Norman Hogan.
Virgil Hogan and his wife, Virginia Lu cille Cooke Hogan, were married
61 years.
Besides his son and wife, Mr. Hogan is survived by a daughter, Virgie Lou Panko of Milford, Ohio; sisters, Addie May Trapp of Walton and Jean Lunsford of Morning View; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home in Independence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery in Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Walton Senior Center, Main and Church streets, Walton, Ky. 41094.
Ricky Lynn Collinsworth, 44, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Latonia, died at 5:25 a.m. Friday at Kettering, Ohio, Memorial Hospital. He was disabled.
Survivors include daughters, Tia Collinsworth and Christi Collinsworth, both of Waynesville, Ohio; a son, Ricky Collinsworth of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Patricia Minella of West Chester, Ohio; a brother, Edgar Collinsworth of Taylor Mill; and his fiancee, Terry Stump of Dayton, Ohio.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.
Glenn E. Foust, 67, of Covington, died at 5:20 p.m. Saturday at his home. He was a retired grinder with International Knife and Saw Co., Florence, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Gambrel Foust; daughters, Judy Pascarella of Fort Mitchell and Melanie Meyers of Cincinnati; a son, Glenn Foust of Cincinnati; a brother, Art Foust of Jonesboro, Ind.; sisters, Willa Dean White of Covington, Fayrean Marler of Somerset and Darlean Johnson of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Arnett & Steele Funeral Home, Pineville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Covington, and from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Arnett & Steele Funeral Home. Burial will be in Big Jim Cemetery, Pineville.
Lucinda Hutchinson, 89, of Covington, died at 1:15 a.m. Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Jack Issac of Harrison, Ohio; daughters, Reva Sexton of Cincinnati, Vivian Fitch of Latonia and Penny Medeiros of Lemon Grove, Calif.; a brother, Kelly Bowling of Hamilton, Ohio; a sister, Cora Philpot of London; 37 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Jesse James, 73, of Butler, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.
Millard L. Lynch, 60, of Dry Ridge, died Saturday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Frances Smith Orsborne, 85, of Owenton, died at 2:24 p.m. Friday at Owenton Manor Nursing Home, Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church, Grant County. Her husband, Stanley Orsborne, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Hershel Osborne of Mount Vernon, Ind.; daughters, Bernice Bell of Williamstown and Barbara Lou Mason of Milford, Ohio; a sister, Ollie House of Hartwell, Ohio; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
Frank D. Pancake, 51, of Florence, died Saturday at his home. He was a carpet installer and a member of First Church of Christ, Burlington.
Survivors include a son, Eric Kayse of Burlington; brothers, Fred Pancake of Dry Ridge and Kenny Pancake of Independence; and a sister, Ruie Pancake of Independence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Robert Gary Patton, 40, of Cincinnati, formerly of Independence, died at 8:03 p.m. Saturday at his home. He was a licensed practical nurse.
Survivors include a son, Robert Cahill of Florence; his parents, Betty Black Patton and Norman G. Patton Sr. of Inverness, Fla.; brothers, Norman G. Patton Jr. of Fairview, Terry Patton of Covington and Steven Patton of Independence.

Arthur N. Pierce, 81, of Paris, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired farmer, carpenter and Kawneer employee. He was a member of Indian Creek Christian Church. A daughter, Karen S. Feeback, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Reeves Pierce; daughters, Phyllis P. Robb and Judy L. Hall, both of Bourbon County; brothers, James D. Pierce of Paris and Ewell L. Pierce of Harrison County; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Richard L. Remke, 77, of Florence, died Friday at his home. He was president of Jacob Schlachters Meat Packing and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dessie Remke; a son, Dick Remke of Cincinnati; daughters, Mary Ann Miller of Cincinnati and Carolyn Remke of Cold Spring; a stepson, Kirt McBee of Florence; a stepdaughter, Tina Hughes of Florence; a brother, Walt Remke of Crestview Hills; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Elmer W. Roetker, 88, of Fort Wright, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Marcedes M. "Skeeter" Whitaker, 86, of Alexandria, died at 2:45 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired seamstress with Hyde Park Clothes, Newport. Her husband, Grady Whitaker, died in 1975.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Harold Lawrence Wolnitzek, of Crestview Hills, died Thursday at his doctor's office. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs, Greater Cincinnati Deaf Club, Cincinnati Flying Fingers Senior Citizens and Loyal Order of Moose No. 1645 in Miamisburg, Ohio. His wife, Barbara Wolnitzek, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sisters, Lucille Cox of Fort Mitchell and Rita King of Westerville, Ohio.
