Mary Tewes, Tewes Poultry matriarch, mother to 18
Mary H. Ratermann Tewes had a simple explanation when people asked her how she managed to raise 18 children.
"She just did it one child at a time, " said Mrs. Tewes' son, Robert A. Tewes, of Fort Wright. "She was extremely religious and always stayed very positive."
All of Mrs. Tewes' children worked at some point on the Tewes Poultry Farm in Erlanger, which her husband, John, bought 57 years ago. Some of the children moved on, but others still run the farm today.

Her children said working on the family farm not only taught them the value of hard work, but also kept the family very close.
Family dinners were an event in the Tewes household, where Mrs. Tewes' fried chicken was always in demand.
"When she brought out the skillet, you didn't have to ask twice, " Robert Tewes said. "We all ate un til we couldn't eat anymore."
