Charles Haegele Jr., 60, alcoholism counselor
Charles Robert Haegele Jr. beat alcoholism in his own life and spent the next 18 years helpin g others as an alcoholism counselor throughout Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
Mr. Haegele died Thursday of a heart attack at his home in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Cincinnati. He was 60.
He was a 1956 graduate of Covington Latin School and studied chemistry at Villa Madonna Colle ge before joining the Marine Corps and serving in Vietnam.
When he returned home, he married
Diana Cristofoli and they moved to Cincinnati. He worked as a lab technician at St. Luke Hospital in Fort Thomas, and later for a pharmaceutical company. For the past 15 years, he worked for the City of Cincinnati in the general maintenance department at District One headquarters and for the Parks and Recreation Department.
He stopped drinking 18 years ago and dedicated his life to helping others, said his sister-in-law, Ann Haegele of Covington.
He worked with Alcoholics Anonymous groups in Pendleton, Grant and Kenton counties and in Cincinnati.
"Every day, we went somewhere to help somebody. He knew their strug gle from experience, " Mrs. Haegele said.
"Charles was a quiet person but he was very witty and very loving. He was so intelligent. As a counselor, he knew how to listen to people and how to support them."
He became known as the person to call when someone needed extra help. "He was the veteran, " Mrs. Haegele said.
Counseling became his mission. His time was devoted to his family and his counseling. "He to ld me one time, if I can help one person not go through life the way I did for years, it's worth it, " Mrs. Haegele said.
Mr. Haegele's son, Tony, died in 1992.
Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, Matt Haegele, at home; sisters, Kay Johnston of Mount Lookout, Ohio, Beverly Drye of Highland Heights, Ruth Erdemir of Naperville, Ill., and Mary Lou Hinton of Covington; brothers, Ebert Haegele of Covington, Edward Haegele of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Rick Haegele of Highland Heights.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Little Flower Catholic Church, Moun t Airy. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Frederick's Funeral Home, Mount Airy.

Diane J. Chamberlin, 60, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired cafeteria worker for the Boone County School System at Boone County High Schoo l.
Survivors include her husband, Dick Chamberlin; daughters, Karen Cobb of Aurora, Ind., and Karina Long of Burlington; a son, Kevin Chamberlin of Anderson Township, Ohio; sisters, Elaine Rafferty of Trenton, N.J., Arlene Walters of Chicago and Debbie Wright of Morristown, N.J.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Beverly J. Dugan, 81, of Walton, died at 11:07 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John Rahe Dugan, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, James Robert Dugan of Terre Haute, Ind.; a daughter, Betty Dugan Dismore of Sellersburg, Ind.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Thomas A. Gunning, 73, of Crestview Hills, died Thursday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. He w as a retired sales representative for Hudepohl Brewery, Cincinnati, a member of Knights of Columbus, Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Gunning; daughters, Sandy Rosenberger, Jodie Koop and Laurie Gunning, all of Edgewood; brothers, Richard Gunning of Mount Sterling, Va., and Jack Gunning of Ludlow; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Barbara Joan Halfenger, 59, of Clyde, N.C., died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, George Halfenger; sisters, Margaret Reno of Canton, N.C., Phyllis Komst of Dinger Mens Ferry, Pa., and Sandra Weaver of Burlington; and a brother, John Keiser of Staten Island, N.Y.

Louise H. Lampke, 97, of Covington, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Her husband, Henry F. Lampke, died in in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Robert H. Lampke of Winter Springs, Fla., and Richard G. Lampke of Groton, Mass.; four grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Alexis "Lexie" Jean Lykins, daughter of Nancy Jean Leistner and Christopher David Lykin s, both of Cincinnati, was stillborn Thursday at Bethesda Hospital, Cincinnati.

Florence Moore, 89, of Warsaw, died Thursday at Gallatin County Care Center, Warsaw.
She was a homemaker and a member of Warsaw Baptist Church. Her husband, Ray Moore, died in 1984. A daughter, Juanita Hendrix, and a son, Gip Moore, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Lewis "Bud" Moore of Warsaw; a daughter, Bea Scott of Warsaw; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Margaret Saalfeld, 82, of Latonia, died at 10:24 p.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Manor, Latoni a.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Her husband, Lawrence Saalfeld, died in 1978.
Survivors include sons, Bill Saalfeld of Fort Mitchell, Tom Saalfeld of Fort Thomas and Bob Saalfeld of Independence; a brother, Vincent Kaub of Independence; and nine grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday in the undercroft of the church following the services.

Raymond J. Stumpf, 85, of Newport, died at 4:50 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Cente r, Florence.
He was a retired driver and bottle shop employee for Wiedemann Brewery, Newport, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Star Liters Club of the former St. Stephen Church, Newport, Catholic War Veterans and Holy Name Society of St. Stephen Parish. His wife, Dorothy E. Connor Stumpf, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia Seiter of Newport and Joanne Mertens of Bellevue; a sister, Mae Brown of Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Earl Thompson, 76, of Foster, died Friday at his home.
He was a retired farmer, carpenter and rural letter carrier, a member of Bethany Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Rural Letter Carriers Association, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Meyer Thompson; daughters, Angie McKinney of Foster and Deborah McElfresh and Rita Clos, both of Brooksville; a brother, William Giltner Thompson of Falmouth; sisters, Evelyn Priest of Falmouth, Mary Jo Markley of Foster and Margaret Cummins of Lexington; and five grandchildren.

Frances M. Wagner, 86, of Ludlow, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired computer operator for the IRS in Covington, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow, and Ludlow Senior Citizens. Her husband, Carlton Wagner, died in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Parsons of Glencoe; a brother, Mike Terry of Ludlow; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
