Gordon Knopf Sr., honored for service with Boy Scouts
Gordon L. Knopf Sr. was involved in the Boy Scouts of America for more than 30 years and loved many things about the organization, including camping under primitive conditions, studying Native American lore and volunteering.
But, "the most important thing to him was teaching responsibility, integrity and character, " said a daughter, Madeline Stoddard of Sparta.
"He wanted to be able to help give these boys values so they could go on and be better people."
Mr. Knopf, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown. He was 85.
A native of Newport, Mr. Knopf helped out during the 1937 flood, using a rowboat to rescue people.
"He was that kind of person, " said Mrs. Stoddard. "He was the kind that would do for other people."
Mr. Knopf was a machinist with A. G. Tool and Die Co. in Miamitown, Ohio, for about 50 years.
After just six months of retirement, he took a job as a security guard with Quality Security in Florence.
"He just could not sit still. He was bored to tears, " said Mrs. Stoddard.
Mr. Knopf began working with the Boy Scouts in 1953, when he agreed to serve as an assistant scoutmaster. He later became a scoutmaster and then a commissioner with the Boy Scouts of America.
Affectionately known as "Yogi Bear, " Mr. Knopf led a troop that included boys from St. Henry Church in Elsmere. They met in the basement of the Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger.
"He helped start troops and advised new leaders in the Northern Kentucky area, " said Mrs. Stoddard.
Mr. Knopf not only helped organize Camp Upper Craig, Camp Lower Craig and Camp Friedlander in Loveland, Ohio, he helped clear the land for them, too, she said.
Mr. Knopf received the Knight of St. George award, a Catholic honor for volunteer work with the Boy Scouts, and the Sil ver Beaver award, the highest Boy Scout award given to non-scouts.
He also was made a member of the Order of the Arrow, a prestigious scouting program that focuses on Native American culture and survival skills.
Mr. Knopf's wife, Caroline F. Knopf, and two sons preceded him in death.
Besides Mrs. Stoddard, Mr. Knopf is survived by another daughter, Sharon Vaske of Burlington; a son, Gordon L. Knopf Jr. of Florence; a sister, Doris Tiemeier of Walton; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family.
