Tom Futhey, former Post editor
Tom Futhey wouldn't let anyone deprive the public of the right to know - not even his best friend.
"He was the best friend I ever had in my life, " said Larry Walton.
"He even had me arrested once."
That's when Futhey was a cub reporter in East Liverpool, Ohio, and Walton was on the local airport authority.
Walton told Mr. Futhey that he couldn't attend an authority meeting. Tom disagreed. Dissatisfied with that answer, Mr. Futhey "went to the probate judge and got a warrant and had the sheriff serve it on me, " Walton said.
Mr. Futhey, an editor at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, died Sunday of lung cancer. He was 56.
The News was the last stop in a 32-year career with the E.W. Scripps Co., which owns the News. He also worked for two other Scripps papers, The Kentucky Post and The Cincinnati Post, as well as the Youngstown, Ohio, Vindicator.
While at The Post, Mr. Futhey lived in Cincinnati's Clifton neighborhood.
Mr. Futhey came to The Kentucky Post in 1970 as news editor. When hired, he was asked if he knew of a good candidate to fill a sports job opening. Mr. Futhey recommended the sports editor at The Evening Review, Cincinnati native Bill Waltz, now production director at The Post. In 1973, Waltz became Mr. Futhey's deputy news editor.
"He was a great guy to work for, firm and fair, " Waltz said.
In the late '70s, Mr. Futhey became The Post's systems director, with Waltz taking over the Kentucky Post news editor position.
Mr. Futhey left The Post for The News in 1989.
Mr. Futhey had wanted to be a journalist since high school in his hometown of East Liverpool. He studied journalism in college, but quit to join the Merchant Marine. In 1969 he went to work in radio, but left for a career in newspapers after he was offered a $5-a-week raise.
But he still used his radio voice, volunteering to read for the blind.
"Tom was a journalist's journalist, " said John Temple, News editor and publisher. "He was a man of integrity who was proud of how newspapers can make the world a better place by keeping people informed."
Mr. Futhey is survived by his wife Carol; and son, Robert Werner Futhey, a student at Colorado State University. Services were today in Denver. Burial will be in Pennsylvania. Memorials may be made to: Providence Presbyterian Church, 19029 E. Plaza Drive, No. 245, Parker, Colo. 80134.
