Frank Neuhaus Jr., 'loved to entertain'

Frank E. "Hank" Neuhaus Jr., lived to perform, whether it was on stage for the Theatre Guild of Northern Kentucky, in front of tour groups at the Oldenberg Brewery or in hundreds of private little dramas that kept the magic of Christmas alive.

"He loved to entertain, " said Mr. Neuhaus' daughter, Sharon Arlinghaus of Fort Mitchell. "He loved to make people happy."

Mr. Neuhaus, 75, of Independence, died Sunday at 11:40 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Covington.

Mr. Neuhaus trained with future show business greats Nat King Cole, Jerry Lewis and Johnny Mercer before he shipped out for the Pacific during World War II.

When he returned from service, he went to work at Balcrank/Schott Chair Co. in Cincinnati, then sold cars for several local dealerships. But it was performing that captured his heart.

His favorite and longest playing role was as Santa Claus, which he started doing for kids in housing projects, distributing toys and candy he bought him self. He was good enough at it that he soon was in demand by churches, civic organizations and families.

"The phone would start ringing in November for people lining him up for their parties or for Christmas Eve, " said his daughter. "Even this last Christmas, he was busy every weekend in December."

Her father was meticulous about his preparation for the role, making sure his beard was firmly attached so no curious youngster could remove it. He wore out at least three or four Santa suits during his 54-year run as St. Nick, Mrs. Arlinghaus said.

"I remember one year, that's what he asked for for Christmas - a new Santa suit, " she said.

After retiring, he gave tours at the Oldenburg Brewery in Fort Mitchell, she said.

He also was a longtime performer with his wife, Patricia A. Vonderhaar Neuhaus, with the Theatre Guild of Northern Kentucky.
