Democrat Holliman, loved UK basketball
In the heady days of the New Deal, a Letcher County doctor held a newborn and said to his mother, "Looks like we've got us a little Democrat here."
"He was stuck with that name and he stuck with it, " said his daughter, Sherry Lynn Heitzman of Crescent Springs. "It was his name and his party for his whole life."
Democrat Holliman, 69, of Ludlow, died Wednesday morning at home. He was a coal miner in Eastern Kentucky for many years before becoming a beef boner and meat cutter for Parson's Beef in Danville and Runt's Meat Packing Company in Cincinnati, said daughter Angela Denise Mitchell of Ludlow.
Mr. Holliman was an outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt, but his real passion was Kentucky Wildcats basketball, Ms. Heitzman said.
"It was hard watching the game (Wednesday), because right up until Monday he was asking us when UK's next game was going to be, " she said.
A son, Hayward Doyle Holliman, preceded him in death.
In addition to Ms. Heitzman and Ms. Mitchell, he is survived by two more daughters, Patricia Ann Dietz of Edge wood and Neshella Kay Holliman of Columbia; sons, Kenneth Ray Holliman of Bellevue, Tommy Dale Holliman, Harvey Shane Holliman and Anthony D. Holliman, all of Covington; a brother, Ernest Holliman of Snoks, Texas; sisters, Lula Brown of Snoks, Edith Christopher of Forsythe, Ga., and Darkis Pearl Arnold of Connersville, Ind.; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

R. Bruce Besten, 72, of Louisville, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired executive vice president and general manager of Graphic Arts Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas, and an Air Force pilot during the Korean War. His first wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Besten, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Farmer Besten; a son, Bruce Besten; daughters, Beth Strange, Barbara Templeman and Blair Besten; stepdaughters, Caren Sheanshang and Kelly Weber; a brother, Emil "Sonny" Besten; and 11 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. today at Holy Spirit Church, Louisville. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Louisville.

Philip J. Breen Sr., 70, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday at Hospice of Cincinnati.
He was a retired employee and director of the employee assistance program of Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Lange Breen; sons, Philip J. Breen Jr. of Fort Thomas and Eric Breen of Cincinnati; daughters, Kristen Fogarty of Latonia and Lori Jackson of Bridgetown, Ohio; a brother, John Breen of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday.

Mahala Durham, 84, of Newport, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of New Macedonia Regular Baptist Church, Newport. Her husband, Lester Durham, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, James Durham of Bellevue and Thomas Durham of Taylor Mill; daughters, Audrey Schwachter of Newport and Edna Markle of Phillipsburg, N.J.; a sister, Edna Wilson of Alexandria; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Yvonne "Bonnie" Garrison Faul, 76, of Brooksville, died Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.
She was a retired counselor for alcoholics, a member of Triumph Christian Church, and a founder of the Pioneer Group of Bracken County.
Survivors include her husband, James C. Faul; sisters, Cliffye Lang of Alexandria, Ann Lee Murst of Highland Heights and Carol Steffen of Cold Spring; and brothers, Stuart Stormer of Alexandria and Jeffrey Stormer of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.

Greene Gabbard, 77, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired vice president of the William Powell Co. and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas. He was a volunteer with the United Way and Community Chest, and a member of Retired Men's Club of Fort Thomas and Club 55 at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas, and Newport Masonic Lodge No. 385.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Gabbard; sons, Gary Gabbard of Park Hills, Gregory Gabbard of Covington and Stephen Gabbard of Fort Thomas; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Maude M. Gray, 84, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Verona Church of Christ.
Her husband, Owens "Joe" Gray, died in 1999. A son, Rob ert Gray, died in 1998.

Mary Catherine Krummen Jones, 71, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.
She was a member of the bereavement committee at St. Henry Church, Elsmere, a contributor to the National Shrine of St. Jude, and a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. Her husband, Edward Jones, died in 1949.
Survivors include daughters, Deborah Jones of Erlanger and Dianne Doering of Richwood; sons, Daniel Jones of Cleveland, David Jones of Fort Thomas, Donald Jones of Latonia, Douglas Jones of Edgewood and Dennis Jones of Union; a brother, Paul Krummen of Florence; and 23 grandchildren.

Ray Elmo McCane, 73, of Butler, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a truck driver with Pennsylvania Truck Lines in Cincinnati and a cus tom car builder.
He was a musician who played the guitar, mandolin and bass, and singer with his band, Ray and the Moonlighters. The band played at Club Moonlight, the Red Barn and Ron's Place.
Survivors include his wife, Helen McCane; stepsons, Willard Kindle of Independence and Lawrence Henn of Bellevue; sons, Melvin McCane of Atlanta and James McCane of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Connie Hunt of Brooksville; daughters, Linda Boggs of In dependence and Donna Sue McCane of Burlington; sisters, Alberta Staggs of Brooksville, Anna Mary Hitch of Milford, Ohio, and Gladys Hitch of Foster; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Linda Rouse, 56, of Elsmere, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a homemaker.

Elmore B. Schrode, 70, of Erlanger, died at 9:35 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired brakeman with CSX Railroad, a member of the Northern Kentucky Saddle Club and an Army veteran of the Korean War. His wife, Fannie Jean Deaton Schrode, died in 1975. A son, Michael Ray Schrode, died in 1984.
Survivors include a son, Edward D. Schrode of Erlanger; daughters, Patricia Ann Lay of Erlanger and Della Marie Schrode of Independence; brothers, George Schrode of Campbell County, Frank Schrode of Latonia and Ralph Schrode of Newport; a sister, Thelma Derrick; eight grandchildren and a great-grand child.

Della Glass Vahlsing, 84, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a home maker, a member of Hickory Grove Bap tist Church, and a former associational director for Baptist Children's Homes. Her husband, Oliver Vahlsing Jr., died in 1970.
