Clarence Anderson, owner of tool and die company

Clarence Vernon Anderson of Burlington was in his 50s when he fulfilled his dream of owning his own business.

But that wasn't too old for him to enjoy running Anderson Tool & Die Co. - eventually creating jobs for 35 people.

"He always said, 'If you work for somebody else, you only make what they pay you. But if you work for yourself, you can make as much as your ability allows you, ' " said his daughter, Clare Laverne Goldsberry of Phoenix.

Mr. Anderson died Sunday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 81.

Mr. Anderson was a native of Bromley who worked as a tool and die maker 36 years - first for Trumbell Electric in Bromley and then General Electric. He retired from the General Electric plant in Blue Ash in 1974.

Within a year, the Anderson Tool & Die Co. was up and running in a converted barn on his farm. As the business thrived, Mr. Anderson opened up a 10, 000-square-foot facility in Hebron whose size has since tripled.

As age and his muscular dystrophy wore down Mr. Anderson, he went to his company as often as possible.

"He went into work every day, in spite of his handicap, to keep tabs on what was going on and to visit with the guys, " said his daughter.

As a member of the Handicapped Travel Club, Mr. Anderson attended club rallies with his wife of 56 years, Mildred Louise Siekman Anderson, with whom he traveled the country in an RV.

"They've been to California, Arizona, Washington state, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee and Florida, " said Mrs. Goldsberry.

Mr. Anderson was a woodworker who built grandfather clocks.
