Dorothy Kiger Davis, 79, longtime school teacher
When Dorothy Kiger Davis went to work as a school teacher in the mid-1960s, she did so out of necessity, her son said.
With eight children to rear, money was tight, and every little bit helped.
"She did it because she had eight kids she had to support, " said Micahel Davis of Fort Wright. "She had a higher education, and, at that time, that was one of the few avenues open to women."
Mrs. Davis, 79, of Erlanger, died Thursday at her home. She taught in the Erlanger-Elsmere School System and was a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Her family and faith were pri mary in her life, her son said.
"That was what she lived for, " he said. "They kept her pretty busy.
"She had a nice, long life, " he said.
Her husband, Donald Davis, died in 1995.

Ervin Delane Ashcraft, 66, of Glencoe, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired mechanic with Roadway Trucking and a member of Vine Run Baptist Church, Dry Ridge. His wife, Betty Lou Ashcraft, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, Tony Ashcraft of Williamstown; a daughter, Tammy Woodyard of Glencoe; his mother, Alvena Jump Ashcraft of Dry Ridge; a brother, Bobby Ashcraft of Crittenden; a sister, Doris Jump of Dry Ridge; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Barry Lynn Beach, 54, of Covington, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence, after an extended illness. He was a retired packaging operator with Butternut Bread Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Oakland Baptist Church
Survivors include a son, Kevin Beach of Crittenden; his mother and stepfather, Marie and Bill Buechell of Florence; his stepmother, Ann Beach of Warsaw; sisters, Linda Jackson of Foley, Ala., and Julie Clifton of Warsaw; a stepsister, Wanda Sullivan of Warsaw; a stepbrother, Randy Densler of Warsaw; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at noon today at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Paint Lick Cemetery.
Carl A. Bischoff Sr., 71, of Warsaw, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired inspector for General Motors, Norwood, Ohio, and a member of Southfork Christian Church, Verona.
Survivors include his wife, Ola B. Scott Bischoff; sons, Kenneth A. Bischoff of Arizona and Carl A. Bischoff Jr. and Robert W. Bischoff, both of Warsaw; a daughter, Ruth Ann Sisson of Amelia, Ohio; a brother, Lawrence Bischoff of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Katherine Reeves of Inde- pendence; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery, Gallatin County.
Faye L. Brown, 83, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a secretary for R.L. Polk Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Louis A. Brown, died in 1993.
Survivors include her daughters, Pauline Ingram of Florence, Betty Stamper of Covington, Jo Ann Williamson of Vila Hills, Patricia Mossman of Erlanger; sons, Rev. Donald Brown of Irvine and J.R. Brown of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Helen Laird of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Central Church of the Nazarene, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

John Andrew Hemmer, 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Louisville, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Anderson Township, Ohio. He was a retired general vascular surgeon for several Louisville hospitals, a World War II veteran of the Army Medical Corps, and a member of American College of Surgeons, Kentucky Medical Society, Kentucky Vascular Society, Jefferson County Medical Society, Louisville Surgical Society and Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay Thomas Hemmer; sons, J. Thomas Hemmer and Richard Hemmer, both of Cincinnati; daughters, Sarah Renda of Louisville, Julia Starr of Cincinnati, Mary Jo Kellagher of Houston, Texas, and Carolyn Matula of The Netherlands; sisters, Mary Martha Curtain and Lois A. Shannon, both of Fort Mitchell; brothers, Paul W. Hemmer Sr., William R. Hemmer and Robert E. Hemmer, all of Fort Mitchell; and 17 grandchildren.

Rosetta Mary MacDonald, 89, of Alexandria, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.
Survivors include her husband, Jesse MacDonald; a son, Dennis MacDonald of Alexandria; a daughter, Mary MacDonald of Alexandria; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will begin there at noon today. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas. Dolores L. Maddock, 65, of Dayton, died at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired pattern maker for Palm Beach Company, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her daughters, Debbie Sparks of Dayton, Diana Smiddy of Silver Grove and Stella Collins of Pewee Valley; sons, Stephen Smiddy of Falmouth, Robert Smiddy ofSilver Grove, James Smiddy of Covington, David Smiddy of Wilder, Chris Courtney of Taylor Mill, and 18 grandchildren.

Lucille V. Mahorney, 80, of Erlanger, died Friday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of Erlanger Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Mahorney of Erlanger; a son, Gene Mahorney of Villa Hills; daughters, Carolyn Buhr of Fort Wright and Debbi Taylor of Mooresville, N.C.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Charlie Palmer, 65, of Crescent Springs, died Thursday at his home. He was the former owner of Transfer Liquor Store, Newport, former owner/operator of Tacoma Park, Dayton, Rumors Niteclub, Newport, The Coney Island, Newport, and Palmer and Gallo Distributing, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Palmer; daughters, Gail Palmer and Sandy Poppiti, both of Wilmington, Del.; sons, Randy Palmer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Todd Palmer of Independence; stepson, Todd Benson of Fort Thomas; stepdaughter, Michelle Watson of Covington; brothers, Richard Parker of Palm Coast, Fla., and Bob Plunkett of San Fernando Valley, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Louise Schmidtz, 89, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a former cafeteria worker at Brookville Elementary School, Brookville, Ind., and a member of the Brookville Eastern Star Chapter.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Anne Spear, 81, of Bromley, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Spear, died in 1998.

Sarah W. Stout, 92, of Fort Thomas, formerly of Jeffersontown, died Friday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a teacher in the Jefferson County School System and a member of the Kentucky Education Association, National Education Association and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
Survivors include a son, Charles B. Stout of Jeffersontown; a daughter, Nancy Trout of Bellevue; a sister, Elizabeth Crawford of Louisville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was a welder with CSI Construction.
