Ruby Spradling, owned grocery store

More than 60 years ago, Pete and Ruby Spradling left Fleming County for Covington to open a grocery store.

Not bowing to prevailing attitudes at the time, nor to alphabetical order, they named the store Ruby and Pete's.

"Does that tell you anything about my mother?" said Sue Osborne of Florence.

"My dad was the butcher and the man behind the counter, but everything went through my mother. She was the most awesome, most powerful 5-foot person I have ever known in my life, " Mrs. Osborne said.

Ruby Hinton Spradling, 87, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West.

"She was the life of the party, though she never drank a drop or said a cuss word, " Mrs. Osborne said. "She had the best heart of anybody you would ever want to meet. Right up until the day before she died, she was telling us who to give things to - to her friends from church or to people who had once worked in their store."
