George T. Meyer, 91, volunteer worker with Elsmere Senior Center
George T. Meyer, 91, of Edgewood, the 2001 Kentucky Public Transportation Volunteer of the Year, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a retired employee of Latonia Ice and Fuel Co., where he toted 100-pound blocks of ice and became known as the "Ice Man." After his retirement, he worked as a sales representative and delivery person for Gillett Brothers and Klee Wholesale companies in Newport.
Mr. Meyer was a volunteer and member of Elsmere Senior Center and was also in charge of donations at the Elsmere Senior Center.
He was named the 2001 Kentucky Public Transportation Volunteer of the Year for helping senior citizens get in and out of the Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens transportation van.
His wife of 58 years, Rose B. Mueller Meyer, died in 1996.
"After his wife died, he didn't know what to do with himself, " said Mr. Meyer's daughter, Mary Jo Hardcorn of Edgewood. "So he began volunteering with the senior citizens organization and loved it."
"When he went out and helped these other people, most of whom were younger than him, it made him realize how lucky he was to have the good health that he had, " said another daughter, Martha Kuchle, of Fort Mitchell. "Helping people made him feel worthwhile. It was his job."
"It kept him going his last six years, " said Mrs. Hardcorn.
Mr. Meyer was a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood, and a former member of Holy Cross Church, the church's Holy Name Society and Crusaders of St. Elizabeth Medical Center. He was a founding member of Holy Cross Boosters.
Other survivors include a son, Jack Meyer of Roebuck, S.C.; a sister, Helen Thome of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Satur day. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Memorials are suggested to Elsmere Senior Center, 179 Dell Ave., Elsmere, Ky. 41018.

Sophie Leona Wilson Anderson, 76, of Walton, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a retired former owner of Sophie's Grocery, Crittenden.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Lucy J. Berning, 93, of Highland Heights, died at 3:17 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired canvas maker with Seinsheimer's. A son, Robert Berning, died in 1982. Daughters, Rosemary Weber and Jean Sydnor, died in 1992 and 2000, respectively.
Survivors include a sister, Lena Hehl of Louisville; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Harriet Catherine Evans, 86, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a registered nurse with Christ Hospital and was a member of Mount Airy United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Ann Beals of Kerrville, Texas; and a nephew, Robert Hyland of Cincinnati.

Eva Mae Fryman, 100, of Covington, died Monday at Swiss Valley Nursing Center, Vevay, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Beaverlick Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Ella Ford of Covington; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

John Bob Harman, 72, of Bellevue, died at 3:34 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired machinist for Littleford-Day Co., Florence, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Wilburn Harman; sons, Terry Harman of Covington and Samuel Harman of Florida; a daughter, Debora Metz of Jamestown, Ohio; a brother, Gary Harman of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mildred R. Harris, 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Anderson Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a retired executive secretary with U.S. Playing Card Co. and a member of Oakley United Church of Christ. She was a former secretary to the director of nursing at Tampa, Fla., General Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Harris; a daughter, Betty Eberhardt of Cincinnati; sons, Bill Shilling, Rick Shilling and Ron Shilling, all of Cincinnati, and Fred Shilling Jr. of San Jose, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and one grandchild.

George P. Heck Sr., 85, of Highland Heights, died at 3:21 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired carpenter with Al Lubrecht Construction Co., Covington, and a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Society, Holy Name Society, Catholic Order of Foresters and Mariners Club, all at St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. His wife, Hilda Neltner Heck, died in 2001.
Survivors include daughters, Rosemarie Holthaus of Red Cloud, Neb., and Margie Myers of Naperville, Ill.; sons, George P. Heck Jr. of Prague, Czech Republic, and Stan Heck of Wyoming, Ohio; sisters, Bertha Braun of Cold Spring and Edna Meyer of California; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Larry Horn, 57, of Covington, died at 12:35 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Horn of Covington.

Sam Bradley Lane, 94, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at his home. He was a blacksmith with Boone County Coal Corp. in West Virginia and a member of Hewett, W.Va., Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Wells Lane; daughters, Virginia Salles of Dry Ridge and Shelvey Jean Duty of Foster, W.Va.; a son, Roger Lane of Norwalk, Ohio; a brother, Asa Lane of Morehead; a sister, Lennie McKinney of Dunnellon, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Nancy Mae Leap, 92, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Alexandria, died Monday in Fort Myers. She was a waitress and cook. Her husband, August Leap, died in 1994.
Survivors include daughters, Jean Neiser of Alexandria and Veda Undeen of Sylva, North Carolina; a son, James Leap of Fort Myers; a brother, William Downey of Atlanta; sisters, Polly Powers of Utah, Florence Harrell of St. Augustine, Fla., and Birdie Thomas of Covington; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Charles "Chuck" L. Lynch, 53, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a collections manager with Kentucky Check Exchange.
Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Dase Lynch; a daughter, Kristen Lynch, at home; his mother and stepfather, Eunice and Earl Crabtree of Florence; brothers, Woodie Lynch of Sterns and Joe Crabtree of Pine Knot; and sisters, Jennifer Thomas of Florence and Janice Kennedy of Wilder.

Paul Anthony Sharon, 34, of Owenton, died Saturday at his home. He was a maintenance and safety director with New Horizons Medical Center in Owenton. His wife, Teresa Walker Sharon, died in 1987.
Survivors include a son, Samuel Wayne Sharon of Owenton; a daughter, Mary Rose Sharon of Owenton; his parents, Larry Sharon of Owenton and Shirley Mulberry Sharon of Dry Ridge; and a sister, Crystal Sharon of Sherman.

Margaret "Peg" Spaulding, 86, of Bellevue, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a former secretary with WLWT Channel 5 and C. Bert Spaulding Realtors of Newport, and a member of Rosie Reds, and St. John United Church of Christ in Newport and Bellevue. She was a Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Dayton.
Survivors include nephews, Baron Spaulding of Villa Hills, Brian Spaulding of Naples, Fla., and Burton Spaulding of Newport.
