BEERMANN, Irene Anna Mae
Irene Anna Mae Boeck was born in Buck Grove, Iowa, November 14, 1930, the daughter of Henry F. and Olga Weller Beermann. She died February 19, 2000, at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of sixty-nine. Irene was baptized in Christ and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She received her elementary education in a rural school near her home and graduated from Denison Community High School with the class of 1948. After graduation, Irene began working for Sheriff N.P. Cavett, where she worked for three years. On June 24, 1951, Irene was united in marriage to Gaylord Boeck at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. This union was blessed with the birth of three sons. After their marriage, the couple settled on a farm in Crawford County. In 1954, the couple moved to a farm in Ida County remaining there until retiring in 1993 when they moved to Schleswig. Irene was a wonderful and caring wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family with devotion. She enjoyed an active life, roller skating with friends at Ballantine's Skating Rink in her younger years. More recently, she especially enjoyed bowling and golfing in couples leagues, socializing with family and friends and with her bridge clubs. She had a special love for her Lord and Savior as a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, devoting more than twenty-six years as a teacher in Immanuel's Sunday School. Additionally, Irene was a member of Immanuel Ladies Aid, serving in various offices, the Immanuel Fellowship Group and the Schleswig Golf Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Edward Beermann and one sister-in-law, Leone Beermann. Survivors include: her husband, Gaylord of Schleswig; three sons, Rev. Alan Boeck and his wife, Jeynell of Portage, Wisconsin, Dr. Curtis Boeck and his wife, Robin of Omaha, Nebraska and Gary Boeck and his wife, Susan of Chicago, Illinois; six grandchildren; three sisters, Alma Denker and her husband, Clarence of Denison, Dorothy Christoffersen and her husband, Lyle 'Shorty' of Audubon, Iowa, Lorena Fink and her husband, Mervin of Denison; two brothers, Walter Beermann and Harold Beermann and his wife, Joan, both of Denison; one sister-in-law, Carmen Beermann of Denison; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing, 'On Eagle's Wings' and congregational hymns, 'What A Friend We Have in Jesus', 'Drawn to the Cross' and 'I Know That My Redeemer Lives'. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Boeck, Hannah Boeck, Abigail Boeck, Benton Boeck, James Boeck and John Boeck. Pallbearers were Neal Christoffersen, David Frostestad, Dennis Denker, Kevin Boeck, Terry Boeck and Joel Fink. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to remain at the church and join them in fellowship and lunch, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Clintwood, Va. ---Joseph Leonard Clay, Sr., 78 died in an Abingdon hospital Friday night.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Letha Clay, Clintwood; seven sons, Norman Clay, Harriman,
Tenn., Arnold Clay and Leonard Clay, both of Clintwood, Greathel Clay, Clintwood, Leo Clay
and Edward L. Clay, both of Knoxville, Tenn., Darrell Clay, Springfield Va.; four daughters,
Mrs. Beatrice Stanley and Mrs. Lura Kiser, both of Clintwood, Mrs. Orlena Stallard, Portland,
Ore., and Mrs. Virgie Boggs, Pound, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. J. M. (Louvina "Viney") Stanley
and Mrs. A. B. (Virgie "Dolly") Yates, both of Clintwood, and Mris. Liza Christian, Roanoke,
Va., 37 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Dorothy A. Coleman was born January 2, 1913, the daughter of Alfred Albert and Anna Katherine Ahart Birkhofer. She died Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-nine.
Dorothy was born in Dow City, Iowa and received her education at Dow City Community School, graduating from the Dow City High School with the class of 1931. She was an achiever in mathematics and excelled in basketball and track.
On January 12, 1935, Dorothy was united in marriage to Wayne Coleman in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1941, they purchased a farm north of Dow City where they settled until 1948 when they moved to Buck Grove. In 1953, still living in Buck Grove, Wayne started Coleman Motors in Denison and subsequently moved to Denison a short time thereafter. The couple were blessed with the birth of seven children.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family and was always involved with their activities in school. She enjoyed their love and had special ways of showing her gratitude. She enjoyed sending cards to those she loved, for any occasion, and writing weekly to each of the grandchildren in college, enclosing spending money with the letter. Dorothy was a die-hard New York Yankees fan. She was devoted to her community and high school, as she attended all the class reunions. Other interests include puzzles, watching TV, flowers, cooking and a special love of her father's homeland of Switzerland. She was blessed to travel there two times in her lifetime. Dorothy was especially fond of holidays and family gatherings. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne in 1980; four sisters, Lena Clark, Marie Keairnes, Golda Brink, Genevieve Buff, two brothers, John and Robert Birkhofer. Survivors include five daughters, Sharon Wight and her husband, Dale of Denison; Sue Griswold of Council Bluffs; Norma McBride and her husband, Quinn of Huxley; Mary Bell and her husband, Dennis of Denison; Doris Cose and her husband, Larry of Norwalk; two sons, Joe Coleman and his wife, Jeri; and Jerry Coleman all of Denison; seventeen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Albert of Denison; Arlene Winn of Willard, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Chrisa Ferguson officiated the services and grave side rites held at Dow City cemetery in Dow City, Iowa. Organist Pattie Bekkerus provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Brad Roos as he sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Wind Beneath My Wings". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Nancy Gonnerman, Debra Wight, Kristen Johnson, Jennifer Cose, Rebecca Bell, Amy Moon, Stephanie McBride, Sandra Williams, Sara McBride, Melissa Coleman, and Jodi Coleman. Those serving as pallbearers were: Michael Wight, Scott McBride, Jeffrey Cose, David Griswold, Gregory Bell, and Timothy Coleman. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
BLAKEMAN, Hiram

Blakeman 65, of Piketon, sustained injuries, which resulted in his death last Thursday morning about 11:00 o'clock, when the ditch in which he was working at Piketon caved in on him. His nephew, James Blakeman, working on top of the ditch, saw the bank start to cave and cried out a warning. Blakeman raised his head at the alarm, just in time to catch the full force of several tons of moving earth squarely on his head. He was buried from sight. A rescue party worked feverishly to extricate Blakeman and succeeded in uncovering the body within ten minutes. The man was alive and breathing at the time, but despite frantic efforts on the part of rescuers and Dr. I.P. Seller and Dr. C. J. Penn, died ten minutes afterward.
The ditch in which the unfortunate man was working, was part of the new drainage system recently authorized by the Piketon village council, and Balkeman was employed by the village at the time. His nephew, James, also employed on the job, was stretching a grade line on top of the bank when the accident occurred. At the point where the cave-in occurred, the ditch was about eight feet deep.
Blakeman's nephew headed the rescue gang, composed of Clyde Baker, Cleve Blakeman, Edward Allen, Theo. Taylor and Alfred Newton.
The dead man is survived by his wife, one son, Herman of Chillicothe; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Lee and Mrs. John Farmer of Piketon.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Piketon, Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, and burial made at the Mound cemetery. Rev. J.W. Sylvester, pastor of the church, officiated.
BLUME, Betty Wilhelmina

Denison, Iowa - Betty W. Miller, 83, of Denison died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. Services will be at 10:30am Thursday at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3pm today at the funeral home.
Betty Wilhelmina Miller was born March 17, 1916, the daughter of William and Edna Girard Blume. She died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, December 13, 1999 at the age of eighty-three. Betty was born in Dow City, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home. On October 29, 1936, Betty was united in marriage to Bernard Miller Sr. at the Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm near Battle Creek, where they lived for five years. After moving to a farm near Denison, they later moved to a farm near Wall Lake, until 1946, when the couple moved to Denison. Betty was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and was especially fond of fern leaf peonies. Betty also enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers, baking cookies and Christmas donuts. In her leisure time she loved fishing, vacationing and attending garage sales. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Charles in 1964. Survivors include two sons, William Miller and his wife, Lois, of Charter Oak; Bernard (Butch) Miller Jr. and his wife, Renee, of Denison; two daughters, Edna Malone and her husband, Ivan of Dow City; Marie Blackman and her husband, Barry, of Denison; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Blume of Dunlap; two brothers, Joe Blume of Dunlap; William Blume and his wife, Raedean, of Storm Lake; one sister-in-law, Deloris Miller of Yakima, Washington; many other relatives and friends.
BLUME, Clara Dorothea

Clara Dorthea Blume, daughter of Theodore and Olive (Girard) Blume, was born July 23, 1895, in Crawford County, Iowa, and died after a lingering illness Monday, February 19, 1973, at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Clara was born and raised on a farm in Hanover Township, attended rural schools, graduated from Denison Normal College and attended summer school in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught country rural schools for many years. The past 5 1/2 years she made her home with her brothers in Charter Oak, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her parents.
Survivors include two brothers Herman and Fritz of Charter Oak, Iowa; three sisters Rachel of Charter Oak, Hertha (Mrs. Fred A. Miller) of Denison, and Mary of San Diego, California; two nieces, six nephews, eleven grandnieces and six grand nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 22, 1973 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. Howard F. Bell officiating.
Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa, with the following serving as pallbearers: Gerald Jurgensen, Verdell Kastner, Peter J. Meggers, Gordon Nahnsen, Lorenz Schultz and Marvin Zage.
BLUME, Hertha Josephine
Hertha Josephine (Blume) Miller, the daughter of Theodore C. and Olive Girard Blume was born June 9, 1908 near Schleswig, Iowa. She died January 23, 1989 at her home in Denison, Iowa, having attained the age of 80 years, 7 months and 14 days.
Hertha grew up on the family farm in Hanover Township. She attended country and public schools and after graduation, she attended Normal College in Denison, Iowa. She later taught country school for a short time.
On December 18, 1932, she was united in marriage to Frederick Albert Miller at Lawn Grove Farm near Schleswig, Iowa. To this union eight children were born.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Miller farmed in the area until 1963 when they moved to Denison, Iowa.
In addition to her parents, Hertha was preceded in death by two sisters: Clara Blume and Rachel Blume and two brothers: Herman Blume and Fritz Blume, and one granddaughter and one grandson.
She is survived by her husband Frederick (Fred A.) of Denison; six sons: Frederick (Freddie) and his wife Patricia of Independence, Iowa; Theodore (Teddy) and his wife LaJune of Buck Grove; John Herman and his wife Marlyn of Denison; David of Tucson, Arizona; Joe and his wife Beverly of Dow City; Tommy and his wife Jackie of Denison and two daughters: Doris and her husband John Weber of Dunlap and Ruby Keiner of Denison; 24 grandchildren, one step granddaughter and 7 great grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Blume of San Diego, California.

Frank Bohnsack Dies Sunday at Milford
Lake Mills- Frank Bohnsack, 70, died suddenly Sunday at his home in Milford. He was born in Milford, March 4, 1884 and was a life long resident of the area. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bohnsack. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Vernetta, at home, and several nieces. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Moravian church, the Rev. James Weingarth officiating. Burial will be in Aztalan cemetery. Friends may call at the Schulz Funeral Home this evening. The body will also lie in state at the church starting at noon on Wednesday.
BOHNSACK, John
From a 1924 Lake Mills Leader, Lake Mills, Jefferson County, Wisconsin:
John Bohnsack, the son of Karl Heinrich Bohnsack and Sophie (m.n., Hoffman) was born at Bethenow, county of Doberan, in Mecklenberg Schwerin, on the 15th of August 1838. He came to America with his parents in the summer of 1854. The family settled on a farm in Milford Twp, Jefferson County, Wis. There he was married
to Miss Johanetta Keiner on February 10, 1863. Six children were born to this union, of whom three preceded the father into their eternal rest. Mr. Bohnsack was a faithful member of the Moravian church - first at Mamre, Wis. - and later, for many years, at Lake Mills, Wis. IN the latter congragation he able fille dthe position of Elder for over six years. Since the year 1910 he lived in retirement in the city of Lake Mills, the sons having taken over his farms. Until about two years ago he enjoyed good health. About four months ago he began to suffer with trouble of his internal organs, but this matter was apparently all corrected under Dr. Eck's careful treatment. However, toward the end he was afflicted with Arteria Sclerosis, which was the cause of death. He passed away at his home on College street, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, December 16, 1924, haveing attained the venerable age of 86 years, 4 months and one day. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Johanetta Bohnsack, two sons, Albert and Frank, both of Milford township, his daughter, Lena at home, and three grandchildren, also by one brother, Christian Bohnsack of Neillsville, Wisconsin. The funeral services were in charge of Mr. Calvin Oehler. Services were held at the Bohnsack residence and both the Rev. H. Richter and O.E. Reidenbach spoke words of consolation. A quartette of the Moravian church sang two selections. Interment was made on the family lot at the Aztalan cemetery on December 18, 1924.
BORGSTAHL, Johann Simeon

John S. Borgstahl, son of John Borgstahl and his wife, Wiebke nee Alpers, was born Nov. 15, 1866 in Erfde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and departed this life on Sept. 7, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Arnold. In early infancy he was baptized in the name of the Trinity and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1883 he came to America, living for a time in Lyons county, then coming to make his home in Denison. Here he was married
to Auguste Neumann on Nov. 17, 1889. Mrs. Borgstahl departed this life in 1901. On May 1, 1905 he was united in marriage to Agnes Neumann, who also was taken from his side by death in 1943. Since that time he made his home with his children in and near Denison. He had lived before this time at various times in Howells and Fremont, Neb., Webster, Minn., and near Denison. Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran church on Sept. 9 with the Rev. C. W. Schmidt in charge. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery with the following acting as bearers: Dale Borgstahl, Glenn Borgstahl, Rickey Borgstahl, Ronald Borgstahl, Wayne Borgstahl and Raymond Keske. Mr. Borgstahl had been an active member of the local Lutheran church, having been the congregation secretary and having taught in Sunday school and also been a choir member. Surviving his death are the following children: Mrs. Ogla Keske of Faribault, Minn., Arthur of Ellensbrug, Wash., Walter and Gerhard of Faribault, Minn., William of Deloit, Roland of Denison, Mrs. Garnet Arnold of Buck Grove and Mrs. Marcella Jenkins of Storm Lake. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
