Jane Ward, matriarch of five generations
Not too many people can boast living members of five different generations of their family.
Jane T. Ward of Burlington lived to be a mother of seven, grandmother of 22, great-grandmother of 26 and great-great grandmother of three.
"That was something she was very proud of - that there were five generations of us and we all live right here in Burlington, " said her oldest daughter, Dionna Wilson, who is a great-grandmother herself.
Mrs. Ward, 79, died at 4:22 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.
She had her first child at 18 and her last child 25 years later. The last two Mrs. Ward raised mostly herself, after the death of her husband, Edwin Ward, in 1974.
With all the kids in the family, it was fitting that Mrs. Ward worked in the baby department at Lazarus.
"(The job) was her pride and joy, " Ms. Wilson said. "Because every time we had a new baby in the family, she was in the right place."
"She was a wonderful mother and a wonderful grandmother and always worried about all of her children, even if they were driving to the grocery store, " Ms. Wilson said.
"She was a very, very precious woman. We're all very heartbroken."
