Dorothy Rogers, faithful fan and letter contributor
All sorts of things prompted Dorothy "Dottie" Rogers to write, but there was nothing that got her to set pen to paper faster than local sports teams.
Reds, Bengals, the UK Wildcats - she loved them all, and was not shy about sharing that affection with others, particularly with fellow readers of The Kentucky Post, to which she was a frequent contributor. Often her thoughts came out in verse, as in this 1996 poem after then UK basketball coach Rick Pitino decided to stay at the school:
"Three cheers, bravo and hip hip hurray,
Because Mr. Pitino decided to stay
. . . For UK fans - we bleed blue,
Thank God Almighty, Mr. Pitino does too."
Ms. Rogers, of Covington, who died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South at 63, was a true fan, said her daughter, Krista Crowder.
"She loved Pete Rose, and wrote about him. She thought the Bengals were awesome, " said Ms. Crowder, of Independence. "She loved Kenny Anderson and threw huge Super Bowl parties when the Bengals were there.
"She really got into March Madness, especially when UK was there. When UK was on, the house was nothing but blue."
Ms. Rogers was glad to see Pitino return to Kentucky, said her daughter, "although she wished it had been UK instead of (the University of) Louisville."
Ms. Rogers taught school for about a decade in Dayton before her children came along. Later, she worked as a secretary at Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, and after that she cleaned houses.
"She was a very energetic woman, " Ms. Crowder said. "She had a golden spirit. She loved people."
