Father Raymond Nieman, founded a home for boys

Father Raymond L. Nieman attended a reunion Friday of about 40 men who once found refuge in the Campbell Lodge Home for Boys, the Cold Spring shelter he founded in 1958 that has since housed hundreds of boys.

Father Nieman, 80, was videotaped talking about the home and his reasons for founding it, then flew back to Naples, Fla., where he died Monday.

Campbell Lodge board member Mark Di Stasi of Western Hills, Cincinnati, said many people were interviewed on-camera at Friday's reunion, including Father Nieman and several former residents.

"When you heard these former residents talk about Father Nieman, they would say Father Nieman as if he truly was their father, " Di Stasi said.

"He was like the father of a big family with all the boys. He was there for them in every aspect of their lives. He was generous, he was kindhearted, but he was also strict, and that was what most benefited many of these boys. He taught them how to respect people, how to respect themselves and how to be successful. He showed them life."

While he served as director at Campbell Lodge, Father Nieman was unsalaried, living among the boys he served. He left the home in 1969 to become pastor of St. Catherine of Siena parish in Fort Thomas, receiving his first paycheck in 11 years. He used the money to take the boys out to dinner.

Di Stasi said he asked Father Nieman Friday for the secret of his success.

"He said, 'The best way to help a boy is to feed him well.' Everything about him was about nourishing these teen-aged boys, both in body and spirit, " Di Stasi said.

Father Nieman was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a radio technician in the European Theater. He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and Kiwanis Club. In 1969, he was named an "Outstanding Kentuckian" by Gov. Louie Nunn.

Father Nieman's mother died when he was a year old, and his father died 11 years later. He lived with his paternal grandmother for two years, then his uncle, Art Willenborg, became his legal guardian.

Father Nieman went to St. John's School and Holmes Evening High School in Covington and studied at St. Meinrad, St. Mary's and St. Francis seminaries in Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained in 1954 and retired after 30 years with the Diocese of Covington, serving at Holy Cross Church Latonia, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, St. Catherine of Siena and St. William Church in Williamstown.
