Donald Davis, athlete, coach, principal, school superintendent
Donald Davis, of Fort Thomas, a star athlete who went on to become a prominent coach, teacher and school administrator, died Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas. He was 81.
Mr. Davis was principal of Bellevue High School from 1957 to 1962, assistant superintendent of Kenton County Schools from 1962 to 1971 and superintendent from 1971 to 1975.
After 28 years in education, he began a second career, serving as executive director of the Engineers and Scientists of Cincinnati and executive director of the Electrical Association of Cincinnati.
He was a sports star when he attended Dayton High School and earned letters in football, basketball and baseball at the University of Cincinnati.
During World War II, Mr. Davis was an Army artillery officer and served 18 months in Europe, arriving 20 days after D-Day.
He began his teaching career in 1947 at Wellston, Ohio, and taught and coached at Dayton High School from 1948 to 1951. His 1949 Dayton football team won the state championship.
He taught and coached at Holmes High School from 1951 to 1957, before becoming principal of Bellevue High School.
Mr. Davis was a former president of the board of control of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and executive secretary of the Northern Kentucky Education Association.
He is a member of the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, the Fort Thomas Lions Club and Bellevue Rotary Club.
"He loved education and especially enjoyed the contact with the kids, " said his wife, Mary Davis. "One time we figured out that he had gone to school 17 years without missing a day.
"I never heard him say he didn't want to go to work. He had great enthusiasm. He was very pleasant, very outgoing and very friendly. He was just a good guy."
Other survivors include a son, Ken Alexander of Fort Thomas; daughters, Jane Reyersdoerfer and Ann Meyer, both of Fort Thomas, and Sally Wright of New Hope, Pa.; a brother, C. Dameron Davis of Fort Thomas; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dobbling Funeral Home in Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Erlanger.

Walter L. Ackerson Sr., 76, of Bellevue, died Monday at West Park Drive Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
He was a boiler operator with St. Francis St. George Hospital, Cincinnati, and a member of Kersten O'Day VFW Post 2899, Dayton. His wife, Martha Jean Ackerson, died in 2001. Daughters Ellen Elizabeth Ackerson and Mary Kathleen Ackerson also preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Jane Daniel and Martha Suzanne "Marcy" Ackerson, both of Bellevue, and Sally Harris of Highland Heights; sons, Chip Ackerson, Larry Ackerson and John Ackerson, all of Bellevue; a brother, Melvin Ackerson of Dayton; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Patricia Elaine Gegan, 58, of Newport, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was a medical secretary with the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing.
Survivors include a sister, Maureen Gegan of Alexandria, and two nieces.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Darlene Shields Harrell, 40, of Newport, died at 7:24 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a self-employed painter.
Survivors include her husband, Allen Harrell; a daughter, Victoria Harrell of Highland Heights; a son, Jeremy Harrell of Walton; a stepson, Allen Harrell of MacClenny, Fla.; her father, Arthur Shields of Newport; her mother and stepfather, Victoria and Jim Burkart of Silver Grove; brothers, Arthur Shields Jr. and Chris Shields, both of Newport, David Shields of Covington and Jim Burkart of Silver Grove; and a sister, Michelle Rees of Silver Grove.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Elbert Dawson Hart, 80, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Me morial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired farmer and a deacon with Indian Creek Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Shaw Hart; a daughter, Judith Ann Porter of Cynthiana; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Marjorie Clarise Hitt, 73, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a retired secretary at Northern Kentucky University. Her husband, James Donald Hitt, died in 1977. A daughter, Deborah Sebastian, died in 1989.
Survivors include sons, Gregory Hitt of Erlanger, Ricky Hitt of Butler and Monty Hitt of Butler; a sister, Elizabeth Norris of Mount Olivet; a brother, Wendell Workman of Jonesboro, Ga.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Gilbert William Krentler, 79, of Verona, died Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.
He was a retired manufacturer's sales representative and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Krentler; and a stepson, James Sumner of Cincinnati.

John B. Kreyling Sr., 74, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Mentor, died Sunday at his home.
He was a retired sales representative with TRW, a member of Cathedral of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Knoxville, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice R. Kreyling; sons, John B. "Jack" Kreyling of Powell, Tenn., Doug Kreyling of Dallas, Rusty Kreyling of Knoxville; a daughter, Karen Everett of Knoxville; and 12 grandchildren.

Emma Lee Myers, 76, of Sardis, died at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet.
She was a former nurse's aide at Maysville Extended Care Center and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. Her husband, Emmitt S. Myers, died in 1987.
Survivors include a son, Larry S. Myers of Lexington, and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mays Lick.
Dorothea Rhoda Rece, 92, of Heath Springs, S.C., formerly of Fort Thomas, died Saturday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Heath Springs Baptist Church. Her husband, Kendall Rece, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Bettie Mobley of Heath Springs; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Earl "Bob" Slay Jr., 67, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Russell G. Stamper, 75, of Fruitland Park, Fla., formerly of Grant County, died Monday at Lake County Regional Medical Center, Leesburg, Fla.
He was a retired truck driver for American Freightlines.
Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Smith Stamper; sons, Jeff Stamper of Florence, Jerry Stamper, Russell G. Delores Stratton, 76, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of Morning View Baptist Church. Sons Junior Stratton and David Stratton died in 1967 and 2001, respectively.
Survivors include sons, Larry Stratton of Erlanger and Johnny Stratton and Greg Stratton, both of Covington; daughters, Bonnie Lantry of Taylor Mill and Sandra Williams of Ludlow; sisters, Janice Spence and Iva McCandless, both of Florence, and Joyce Price of West Covington; brothers, Ronnie Haggard, Roy Haggard and Pete Haggard, all of West Covington, Lee Haggard of Union and Harold Haggard of Independence; 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Charles Junior Thompson, 72, of Covington, died at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was a retired handyman in Covington and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Humphrey Thompson; sons, Matthew Thompson of Nebraska and Greg Thompson of Kentucky; a daughter, Sue Ouhuela of Riverdale, Calif.; and grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
William Edward Walsh, 68, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at his home.
