Donald Freer, committed to caring for other people
Donald E. Freer of Fort Thomas was the kind of church member who did more than warm a pew once a week.
On Sundays you could find him greeting people at the door of the First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas, where he was a deacon and a trustee.
But the rest of the week, when Mr. Freer wasn't working or spending time with his family, he devoted hours to charitable and ser vice organizations.
For example, he was a 50-year member of both Newport Commandery 13 and the Royal Arch Masons. For 40 years he was a knight commander on the court of honor of the Scottish Rite in the Syrian Shrine, where he played the tambourine in the Oriental Band. For five years, he held the prestigious position of ambassador in the Syrian Shrine.
"He was committed and involved in caring for other people, " said a daughter, Marcia M. Freer of Crete, Neb.
"He often talked to me about the fact that people don't do this anymore. That they don't join these kinds of organizations where Christian men come together to kind of go beyond what you would do in church."
Mr. Freer died Tuesday morning at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was 91.
He worked 38 years as a fire protection engineer and manager with the Kentucky Inspection Bureau - now the Insurance Services Office in Covington.
His job was to inspect buildings to ensure they met safety requirements.
"When the Beverly Hills fire occurred, he had to go in there and try to help figure out why that happened, " said his daughter. "He was involved in the insurance side of it."
Mr. Freer retired in 1975.
He was a grand commander with the Knights Templer, a past president of the Northern Kentucky York Rite Association, and a member of York Cross of Honour in Kentucky, Society of Past Masters F&AM of Northern Kentucky, Dora Chapter No. 2 OES, Syrian Temple and Shrine Club of Northern Kentucky.
He was also a member of the Northern Kentucky Firefighters Association.
Mr. Freer enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling. After his wife, Virginia Johnson Freer, died in 1984, Mr. Freer traveled to Alaska, Australia, London, New Zealand and Russia.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Donacq F. Wells of Louisville; a son, David E. Freer of Fort Thomas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
