John Isler, 93, former state representative
John Isler would eventually become a state representative and Democratic Party leader, but he first became known in Covington and Latonia as a "call boy" for the L&N; Railroad Co. in the 1920s.
"He'd knock on the doors of the train men in the mornings to make sure they'd be awake in time to get to work, " said his wife, Mary Jo Isler.
Years later, he'd be known in Kenton County not for knocking on doors, but as a champion for the elderly and a tireless proponent of removing the sales tax from food products.
Mr. Isler, of Florence, died Monday morning at Woodcrest Manor in Elsmere. He was 93.
He represented the 65th district, encompassing Kenton County, from 1956 until 1980. He was dean of the state House of Representatives for 10 years and served on several committees, including judiciary statutes, business and professional and insurance and banking committee. He also was chairman of the enrollment committee for 26 years.
Mr. Isler also was part of a Democratic planning committee that twice brought John F. Kennedy to Northern Kentucky. Kennedy visited Newport and Covington as a presidential hopeful on Oct. 6, 1960, and returned two years later. It was the first Northern Kentucky visit by a sitting president since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938.
Mr. Isler joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles, No. 329, in Covington, at age 18 and later became that organization's president, and later was president of the Dayton Eagles. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was secretary of the Democratic Club of Kenton County for 30 years. He was a graduate of Holmes High School.
Mrs. Isler said she and her husband met as children at St. Patrick's Church on Philadelphia Street in Covington.
"We'd meet at dances and other events as teens, and finally we decided we should just go together, " Mrs. Isler said. They were married
Jan. 28, 1933, in New Richmond, Ohio, she said.
