Kevin Gillette, former professional bowler
Kevin Gillette, 50, of Florence, a former professional bowler who won the Canadian Open and rolled nine perfect games, died Saturday of complications from diabetes at the Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia.
One of the finest bowlers in Northern Kentucky history, Mr. Gillette spent several years on the Professional Bowlers Association tour in the 1980s.
In his rookie season in 1980, he won the Canadian Open and finished second in voting for the PBA's Rookie of the Year award that year.
He had numerous high finishes in PBA national events and won several regional tournaments both on and off the PBA tour.
Mr. Gillette bowled four perfect games on the PBA tour and five locally.
He was a member of the team that won the Cincinnati championship three times and also won the city's singles championship. He has been nominated for induction into the Cincinnati Bowlers Hall of Fame.
Mr. Gillette suffered from diabetes the last 25 years of his life, and his condition worsened over the years.
He lost his vision several years ago and was on dialysis the past three years.
"He decided dialysis was not providing him with the quality of life he wanted, so he decided on Dec. 28 to go off dialysis so he could go to a better world, " said Mr. Gillette's daughter, Brooke Gillette of Lakeside Park.
"He was very courageous in his decision. It was heart felt. He wanted to leave with some dignity. He took care of everything for his family before he went off dialysis."
Mr. Gillette began bowling when he was 6 years old and won a national tournament when he was 11.
"He spent three or four years on the PBA tour, but bowling was a hard sport to make a decent living at, " said Ms. Gillette.
"He had two small children and a young wife at home to provide for, and he hated to be away from his family.
"So he came home and worked at local bowling alleys, helping organize tournaments and stimulating interest in bowling."
Mr. Gillette was a member of the Burlington Baptist Church.
Other survivors include a son, Beau Gillette of Singapore; a sister, Mary Dickerson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his mother, Dorothy Gillette, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and a grandson.
Mr. Gillette's body is to be cremated.
There will be a visitation from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Feb. 11, at the Linnemann Funeral Home in Burlington, followed by a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at Burlington Baptist Church.
Anne Leser, skilled chef, music lover
Friends and family will recall Anne J. Leser every time they eat a fine meal or hear beautiful music.
Mrs. Leser, 67, of Indian Hill, died Saturday at Bethesda North Hospital after a short illness.
An accomplished chef and avid music lover, she was married
for 27 years to Lawrence A. Leser, retired chairman, president and chief executive officer of E.W. Scripps, the Cincinnati-based media company and parent company of The Cincinnati Post, The Kentucky Post and WCPO-TV.
"She was a great inspiration to Larry throughout his time as CEO, " said Bill Burleigh, who was also CEO at Scripps before he retired.
A native of Steubenville, Ohio, Mrs. Leser moved to Cincinnati after being graduated from Ohio State University. For a time she worked as a dental hygienist.
Her true calling, however, was with the culinary arts and Mrs. Leser toured the kitchens of France in 1993 to refine her cooking skills. Her stepson, Larry Leser Jr. of Alamo, Calif., said Mrs. Leser "never made a simple meal."
Whether an informal pancake breakfast or an elegant full-course dinner, Mrs. Leser was a perfectionist who always got every detail right, he said.
Burleigh said he will miss her desserts. "She was legendary for her desserts. Her chocolate was just heavenly, " he said. "She just loved to cook and for people to enjoy her cooking."
In 1994, the Lesers' kitchen was featured in The Cincinnati Post, along with Mrs. Leser's recipe for tomato sauce.
She was partially responsible for Scripps' involvement with the Food Network. "It was due to her prodding, in part, that got the company interested in the Food Network, " Burleigh said.
Scripps now owns a majority interest in the cable channel.
Her love of music included support of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, which named a New Year's Eve concert in her honor, Burleigh said, and she was a member of its board of overseers.
Mrs. Leser also sang in the choir of Indian Hill Episcopal-Presbyterian Church for many years and taught Sunday school there, said the Rev. Jim Metzger, Episcopal rector at the church from 1973 to 1989.
"She was the happiest member we had, " he said.
"She was a person who sang from her heart and soul, " said Sylvia Plyler, organist-director of music at Indian Hill Church. "She understood very quickly the emotion and the spirit of the music."
In addition to her husband and stepson, she is survived by her son, Charles Johnson of Hyde Park; stepdaughters, Kathleen Leser of Decatur, Ga., and Sharon Baumberger of Atlanta, Ga., and Nancy Smith of Hyde Park; and six step grandchildren.
The funeral will be private with burial at Indian Hill Church cemetery.
The family plans to hold a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, at Indian Hill Episcopal-Presbyterian Church, 6000 Drake Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Anne J. Leser Music Fund at Indian Hill Church.
