Ralph Heile, champion dancer

Ralph C. Heile, 90, of Fort Mitchell, a champion dancer who taught ballroom dancing in Covington in the 1930s and '40s, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Mr. Heile and his late sister, Alma Heile Trantor, operated the Heile Trantor Dance Studio. Although Mr. Heile left the operation after World War II, Mrs. Trantor's daughter continued to run the Trantor School of Dance into the 1970s.

Mr. Heile became co-owner and treasurer of the Court Index Press in Cincinnati, but he and his wife of 56 years, Mary E. Brinker Heile, who died four months ago, continued to star in dance contests and in local ballrooms.

"People would stop and form a circle around them and watch them dance, " said Mr. Heile's daughter, Anne Scheve of Fort Mitchell.

Mrs. Scheve recalled a time when her parents were at a dance convention in Chicago and were stopped by police as they danced through the streets of Chicago with Gene Kelly, star of the movie "Singing in the Rain."

"They had to explain to the cop that they were not drunk, that they were at a dancing convention, " she said.

Mrs. Scheve said she and her sisters grew up listening to Lawrence Welk and watching their parents dance.

"Father had a very outgoing personality, " she said. "He enjoyed life to its fullest. He and mother loved to travel and went all over Europe several times."

During World War II, Mr. Heile served in the Army and was at the Battle of the Bulge.

"He was decorated with the Legion of Merit and stood next to (Medal of Honor winner and movie actor) Audie Murphy at the ceremonies, " said Mrs. Scheve.
