Neal Streutker, farmer, superintendent of mails
Neal C. Streutker of Florence loved the outdoors, so he thoroughly enjoyed his days as a mail carrier and farmer.
Mr. Streutker was assigned to the Covington branch of the U.S. Postal Service for 39 years, retiring in 1974 as superintendent of mails.
But before he was promoted, he delivered mail in cities such as Covington, Ludlow and Erlanger for two decades.
"He liked being outside and meeting people, " said his wife, Ruby Streutker.
"He really felt a big sense of responsibility."
Mr. Streutker died Monday at his home. He was 86.
Mr. Streutker was born in Park Hills and graduated from high school at the age of 16.
"He grew up during the Depression, " said Mrs. Streutker. "Of course, there were no jobs in 1932, so he went to Indiana and worked on a farm.
"He always wanted to live on a farm and be a farmer. To him, that meant security."
The couple, who were married
65 years, eventually bought a farm in Florence, where Mr. Streutker built a house and raised flowers and tobacco.
"He was always happy to be outside, " said his wife.
Mr. Streutker served during World War II as a member of the Merchant Marines in the Pacific and European theatres.
He organized and led Boy Scout Troop No. 854 at Hopeful Lutheran Church in Florence and belonged to the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Mr. Streutker was a man of strong faith, according to his wife, and a member of Hopeful Lutheran Church and then Union Presbyterian Church in Union.
"He was rather reserved, but I think everybody respected him, " Mrs. Streutker said. "We found a Christmas card to him signed by a person who said, 'You're the best boss I ever had.' "
In addition to his wife, Mr. Streutker is survived by a daughter, Susan Byrd of Florence; sons, Alencq Streutker of Florence and Mark Streutker of Ludlow; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
