Raymond Ruschman, dad to 10

Raymond Ruschman, a resident of Newport for more than 40 years, died Saturday at 8:45 a.m.

The retired mechanic and avid bowler was 80.

Mr. Ruschman had 10 children - six boys and four girls - with his wife of 55 years, Rita Wolfzorn Ruschman.

"I didn't mind having 10 children with a husband like Ray, " Mrs. Ruschman said. "He was a great father and a great husband. He did it all."

A teen living in Campbell County during the Great Depression, Mr. Ruschman went to work instead of high school, cutting grass and working at a gasoline station until World War II.

It was a work ethic he kept up for a lifetime, his wife said, retiring after 37 years with Neltner Oil Co. in Newport.

"He did everything he could. He'd work at night and then come home and help with the children, " Mrs. Ruschman said. "He'd join bowling leagues and be the league secretary so he wouldn't have to pay for it. Anything to bring home a little more money."

Mr. Ruschman kept bowling even after diabetes claimed the toes on his right foot in the mid-1980s.

"The boys made him a special shoe, and he kept right on bowling, " his wife said. "He'd bowl five nights a week."

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II who fought in Europe, Mr. Ruschman was a member of American Legion Post 11 and Holy Spirit Parish, both in Newport.
