Opal Raabe, 97, cook at Dixie Heights High
Opal M. Raabe, 97, of Erlanger and formerly of Covington, a former baker at Dixie Heights High School who had 53 great-grandchildren, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
"She was widowed when she was 41 years old and raised all seven of us children by herself, " said Mrs. Raabe's daughter, Betty Maley of Crestview Hills. "That was quite a task, but she did it. And she made better people of us."
Mrs. Raabe worked at Dixie Heights High School until she was 70 years old.
"She would leave for work at 5:30 in the morning in Covington and take two bus transfers to get to Dixie Heights, " said Mrs. Maley. "She loved her work at school. The kids all knew her and loved her cooking.
"She was a great pie and cookie maker. She loved making cookies for her grandchildren. She enjoyed doing all kinds of things for her family and friends."
Mrs. Raabe lived in Covington until she was 65 and was a member of St. Henry Church in Elsmere.
Her husband, Roy Pete Raabe, died in 1946. Sons, William Raabe and Thomas Raabe, died in 1971 and 1997, respectively. Daughters, Pauline Raabe and Mary Rose Mahoney, died in 1944 and 2000, respectively.
Other survivors include daughters, Dorothy Huning of Edgewood and Joann Kern of Indianola, Miss.; 22 grandchildren, 53 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel in Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Lois Andrews, 87, of Newport, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Kathleen A. Bauer, 50, of Cold Spring, died at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Robert A. Bauer; a son, Timothy James Bauer of Knoxville, Tenn.; her mother, Evelyn Thomson of Bolivar, N.Y.; a brother, James Thomson of Machias, N.Y.; sisters, Eileen Tomasello of Orchard Park, N.Y., and Susan Schupp of Lancaster, N.Y.; and two grandsons.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory. Memorials ae suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Michael L. Callahan, 43, of Bellevue, was found dead Monday at his home. He was a chef with Mitchell's Fish Market, Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Angela Eads; stepsons, George Crawford Jr. and Christopher Crawford, both of Bellevue; stepdaughters, Dee Angela Eads and Stephanie Crawford, both of Bellevue; a stepmother, Jan Callahan of Detroit; a brother, Thomas W. Callahan of Newark, Del.; and a sister, Kathy M. Robinson of Fort St. John, British Columbia.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Norman Chandler, 85, of Florence, died at 2:37 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired mechanic with Union Light Heat & Power Co., Covington, and Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. He was a former member of Florence United Methodist Church and a member of Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence. His first wife, Delta Chandler, died in 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Listo Chandler; a daughter, Donna Klink of Cincinnati; and two granddaughters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Sean Michael Dunn, 27, of Erin, Tenn., died Tuesday at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Ind. He was a roofer.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Cox Dunn; sons, Phoenix Dunn and Westley Dunn, both of Joelton, Tenn.; his mother, Barbara Powell of Brooklet, Ga.; stepmother, Marian Dunn of Erin, Tenn.; brothers, Thomas Dunn of Nashville, Tenn., and Joshua Dunn of Erin, Tenn.; and sisters, Marsha Beasley and Sunshine Powell, both of Brooklet.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling local arrangements.
John Russell Estes, 77, of Lexington, died Wednesday at Hospice Care Center, Lexington. He was a former owner of John Estes Plumbing and Heating Co., Lexington, and a member of Salem Church of Christ, Harrison County.
Survivors include his wife, Ivaline Rogers Estes; sons, Jack Parker Estes and Jerry W. Price, both of Lexington; brothers, Walter Estes of Dothan, Ala., and Edward Estes Jr. of Lexington; sisters, Lorene Fryman of Cynthiana and Ruth Clark of Harrodsburg; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Battle Grove Mausoleum, Cynthiana.
Clarence George "Woo" Hoffman, 75, of Fort Thomas, died at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired mechanical engineer with Turner Construction and a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas. He was a member of National Association of Investors, Sheet Metal Workers Union and Campbell County Jaycees. His wife, Jean Stevens Hoffman, died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, John T. Hoffman of Taylor Mill; and sisters, Ruth Hoffman and Marian Hoffman, both of Alexandria.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Lizzie Hyatt, 84, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at Edgemont Nursing Home, Cynthiana.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Norman William Lawson, 87, of Erlanger, died Friday at Baptist Village Care Center, Erlanger. He was a salesman with U.S. Steel and a member of Fort Thomas Masonic Lodge No. 808. His wife, Dorothy Lawson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Michael Lawson of Dayton and Norman Lawson of Frankfort.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Martha Jane Linneman, 78, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke East Hospital, Fort Thomas. She was a retired bookkeeper for the Northern Kentucky Baptist Home, Newport, and a member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Dayton. Her husband, Edward Linnemann, died in 1994.
Survivors include her son, Michael Clos of Sanders; sisters, Albnerta Flerlage and Ceceila Arink, both of Covington; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Monday in the cemetery chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Sister Mary Magdalita, S.N.D, formerly Mary A. Gebhardt, 90, of Covington, died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday at Lourdes Hall, Sisters of Notre Dame, Park Hills.
She ministered to sisters in community services in the Dioceses of Covington and Lexington, and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and Mobile, Ala. She also served in the culinary departments of St. Paul Seminary in New York, LaSalette Seminary in Ipswich, Mass., and domestic services with St. Paul's College in Washington, D.C.
There are no immediate survivors.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sisters of Notre Dame Convent, Park Hills. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the convent Provincial House, with a wake service at 5 p.m. Burial will be in the convent cemetery. Lewis Marcum, 80, of Taylor Mill, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday at his home. He was a retired supervisor with building services for the federal government's General Services Administration and a member of Taylor Mill Pentecostal Church, American Federation of Government Employees and Mail Handlers' Union. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jenny Lee Hellard Marcum; a son, Tony Marcum of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Martha Jo Carr of Corinth; brothers, Delbert Marcum of Sandgap and Boss Marcum of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Martha Gay of McKee, Mag Felty of Sandgap and Sylvia Hammons and Sithie Scribner, both of Berea; and seven grandchildren.

Louis Meyer Jr., 89, of Fort Wright, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a re tired former owner of Dixie Lanes bowling alley in Covington and formerly owned Packard Auto Agency, Covington. He was a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. His wife, Kathryn Meyer, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Lubrecht Bitter of Edgewood; sons, Louis "Bucky" Meyer III of Latonia and John William Meyer of Fort Wright; a sister, Virginia Meiners of Fort Wright; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Raymond G. Reeder, 79, of Cold Spring, died at 1:42 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a brake man with C&O; Railroad and a member of First Christian Church of Silver Grove. He was an honorary member of the Silver Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret L. Case Reeder; sons, Raymond Dean of Burlington and Michael Guy of Ryland Heights; a daughter, Donna Marie Holsapple of Boston; brothers, Clifton Reeder and Jehue Reeder, both of Jamestown; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, Silver Grove, Ky. 41085.
George E. Schmale, 94, of High land Heights, died Wednesday at Lakeside Health Care Center, High land Heights. He was a retired rail road detective with the Pennsylvania Railroad and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Gertrude Mattingly Schmale, preceded him in death.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Minnie L. Stauss, 97, of Union, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Her husband, William Stauss, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Charles Donald Horton of Union; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Alma Mae Jones Trent, 74, of Florence, died Monday at her home. She was a retired clerk with the Hamilton County, Ohio, Coroner's Office.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy Maria Walz of Springfield, Mo., and Lynn Colette Bonvell-Hunt of Dade City, Fla.; sons, Edgar Dwight Trent of Warsaw and Robert Timothy Trent of Florence; sisters, Bernice Smalling and Margaret Bue chel, both of Newport, Ethel Seibert of Nicholasville and Rosemary Jones of Covington; a brother, Lilburn Jones of Demossville; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
