Dorothy Pompilio, Cold Spring mother and restaurateur
Dorothy Neumann Pompilio played a number of roles in her life. Being a mom was her favorite.
She and her husband, Michael, who died in 1985, had seven children. She also was a owner and operator of the family business, Pompilio's restaurant in Newport, as well as a volunteer at St. Joseph School in Cold Spring.
"But being a mom - and eventually, a grandmother and great-grandmother - is what she loved most, " said one of her three daughters, Donna Lange of Alexandria.
"She was always home when we came home from school, with the milk and the cookies, " Mrs. Lange said. "Family was everything to her. She wasn't the type who went out with friends. She'd rather be at home with her kids. In fact, she would've liked to have had more children."
Mrs. Pompilio, of Cold Spring, died at 11:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. She was 84. Mrs. Lange said her mother had an optimism that stemmed from a profound and abiding faith in God.
"When our brother, Tony, died in 1990, she mentioned that no one should ever have to bury a child, " Mrs. Lange added.
"But we never heard her actually complain or see any evidence that she was feeling sorry for herself. She believed that everything happens for a reason and that, somehow, things always work out for the best. That was her faith."
Mrs. Lange talked about what a blessing it was to have her for a mother. "I would talk to her every day. If I didn't call her, she'd call me. I knew when I spoke with her at the hospital these past few days and she didn't call me 'honey, ' that she was really sick."
