Linda Leising, advocate for the handicapped
Linda Leising, an advocate for the handicapped despite her own physical disabilities, died Saturday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas. She was 52.
Ms. Leising suffered from Friedreich's ataxia, a rare disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system.
"She could walk, with a cane, at her high school graduation, but not too long after that she was in a wheel chair, " said her brother, Michael Leising, of Fort Thomas.
"Mentally, she was fine. She was always very intelligent. But the physical handicaps were very frustrating for her, " he said. "But she had a way of touching people, even when it became difficult for her to physically touch people."
The former telephone sales worker was a member of the Greater Cincinnati Handicapped Association and often traveled to Frankfort to fight for rights for the disabled. She frequently called on legislators to mandate handicapped access to buildings and sidewalks.
In 1993, Ms. Leising fulfilled a life-long dream by moving from a Highland Heights nursing home into her own home, built by Habitat for Humanity of Northern Kentucky on 33rd Street in Latonia.
She graduated from St. Thomas High School in Fort Thomas and later attended Xavier University and Northern Kentucky University.
