Jane Eaton White, Wave and gunnery instructor
As a Navy Wave during World War II, Jane Eaton White of Fort Mitchell served as a gunnery instructor for sailors at Norfolk, Va.
In 1944 and 1945, she drove Red Cross trucks carrying equipment and supplies - primarily bandages - to military supply depots up and down the East Coast.
"Women couldn't be combatants at that time, so they would perform shore duties that freed up men to go to sea, " said her son, Clinton "Skip" White of Lincoln University, Pa.
Although WAVES stood for "Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, " not everyone welcomed women in uniform, he said.
"Some of the men would give them a hard time because the men would be sent to sea instead of doing shore duty, which meant the women were out of harm's way, " he said.
But at least one enlisted sailor just back from the South Pacific thought the Wave from Kentucky could do no wrong. His name was Clinton White and the two were married
for 45 years.
