Charles Stoll, river pilot and oil company owner
Charles William Stoll, the river pilot who helped bring the Delta Queen to Cincinnati in 1948, died Monday in Louisville. He was 85.
Mr. Stoll was a salesman and later owner of the family business, Stoll Oil Company, which became Sinclair and later Atlantic Richfield. But his heart was on the river.
He was a great favorite of the Greene Family which ran the Greene Line steamboat company in Cincinnati, said Alan Bates, first president of the Howard Steamboat Museum in Indiana and a contemporary of Mr. Stoll's.
Bates said Mr. Stoll piloted virtually all the Greene Line boats after 1936. During WWII, he used his river skills for the war effort, delivering Landing Ship Tanks that were built near Louisville and in Marietta, Ohio.
When owner Gordon Greene bought the Delta Queen in California after World War II, Mr. Stoll helped pilot the boat to its new home. Bates said Mr. Stoll learned to steer on the Avalon excursion boat in the 1930s. Close to three decades later, he would oversee the restoration that turned the Avalon into the Belle of Louisville, as chairman of the boat's operating board. Jefferson County bought the Avalon at a bankruptcy auction in 1962.
Mr. Stoll was past president of the Propeller Club and honorary chairman and charter member of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen.
