Jay Matthew Spenlau, 34, touched many other lives
Jay Matthew Spenlau, 34, of Taylor Mill, who was born with a heart defect but vowed to live as normal a life as possible, died Saturday at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
He was an employee of Taylor Mill Pharmacy, PNC Bank in Taylor Mill and T&W; Ford.
Mr. Spenlau was a member of St. Patrick Church in Independence, the Taylor Mill Recreation Committee and the Fifth Kentucky Civil War Reenactment Group.
He also coached the undefeated St. Patrick's women's softball team from 1999-2001.
"Jay was my hero, " said Mr. Spenlau's sister, Karen O'Conner of Taylor Mill.
"He never used his heart problems as an excuse for anything. He always wanted to lead a normal life. He didn't want anybody to know he had any problems. It was a miracle he was alive at all."
Mr. Spenlau had to limit some of his activities and sometimes had to rest when his heart was overtaxed.
"But he found a way he could participate in most things, " said Mrs. O'Conner. "I have no idea how he did it. He was a fighter.
"He also maintained a great sense of humor and was very caring and nurturing. He was always worried about everyone else, not himself. He touched a lot of lives and he lived a great life."
Other survivors include his wife, Pam Koch Spenlau; sons, Luke Spenlau and Michael Spenlau, both at home; daughters, Elizabeth Spenlau and Jessica Spenlau, both at home; his parents, Mike and Lois Spenlau of Taylor Mill; a brother, Steve Spenlau of Ryland Heights; and grandmother, Lillian Spenlau of Latonia.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the family cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Jay Spenlau Benefit Account, in care of any Peoples Bank branch. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Lorrine Margaret Anness, 79, of Indianapolis, formerly of Berry, died Friday at Windsor Manor Nursing Home, Indianapolis. She was a retired children's home worker in Indianapolis.
Survivors include daughters, Ruby Snapp and Sheila Wrightman, both of Indianapolis; and sons, Dennis Anness and Harold L. Anness, both of Indianapolis.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, is handling arrangements.
Henry "Doc" James Denny, 42, of Demossville, died Thursday of a gunshot wound at his brother's home in Dry Ridge.
He was a self-employed construction worker and an Army veteran.
A son, Rodney Denny, died July 9.
Survivors include his wife, Carla Denny; a daughter, Amber Spegal of Demossville; a brother, Todd "Coye" Denny of Dry Ridge; sisters, Loretta Grant of Demossville, Jessie Grant of Dry Ridge and Tina Deaton of Walton; and five grandchildren.
Services were Sunday at Gardnersville Baptist Church. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, handled arrangements.
Carolyn F. Driskell, 70, of Bethel, Ohio, died Saturday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a retired psychologist with the Clermont County Board of Education in Ohio.
Survivors include her husband, Clay Driskell; daughters, Sandy Prantl of Norwood, Ohio, Linda Cook of Milford, Ohio, and Donna Prantl of Grove City, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, is handling arrangements.
Clyde Hargett, 91, of Maysville, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a tractor mechanic with Limestone Farm Center, Old Washington, and a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalia Hargett; a daughter, Mary Jones of Maysville; sons, Bob Hargett of Florence and Tim Hargett of Maysville; a half-brother, Don Hargett of Crothersville, Ind.; half-sisters, Faye Sellers and Bessie Smith, both of Brooksville, Louise Burton of Augusta and Betty Hargett of Bellevue.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Church, Maysville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville.

Ruth Henzerling, 67, of Highland Heights, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a cook with Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.
Survivors include a sister, Carol Henzerling of Covington.
Services were this morning at St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, handled arrangements.
Bertha May Modert Hoard, 86, of Bedford, died Saturday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital, LaGrange. She was a retired cook with Bronson, Mich., Community Schools, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Pendleton.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Hoard of Pendleton; stepsons, Dale Hoard and Philip Hoard, both of Bronson; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton.
Burial will be in English Cemetery, Carrollton.
John E. Horn, 83, of Florence, died Saturday at his home.
He was a senior aircraft mechanic with American Airlines and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
He was a member of Vanguard and American Airlines Retired Employees, and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His first wife, Ruth Horn, died in 1969. His second wife, Rilda Horn, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, James Horn of Union; a daughter, Judy McDaniel of Florence; a brother, Richard C. Horn of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Michael Ray King, 52, of Carrollton, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a truck driver with Holloway & Son Trucking Co. and a member of United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton. A son, Brian Scott King, died in 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Janice King; a son, Michael Joseph King of Carrollton; his father, Harold R. King of Louisville; a brother, Darrell King of Louisville; sisters, Barbara Lawson of Louisville and Lori Rodgers of Bardstown; and three grandchildren.

Walter "Nick" Nickell, 75, of Corinth, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired bus driver with the City of Ann Arbor, Mich., a member of New Columbus Methodist Church, Corinth, and a U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Nicholson Nickell of Corinth; a son, Tom Allen Nickell of Ypsilanti, Mich.; a daughter, Tamara Lee Nicks of Breckenridge, Texas; stepdaughters, Patricia Clark of Venice, Calif., and Teresa King of Santa Cruz, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Michigan.
Phil Noel, 61, of Glencoe, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired material handler with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Price Noel; a son, Jeffrey Noel of Lawrenceburg; daughters, Jody Gorman of Hebron, Connie Wainscott of Warsaw and Heather Marksbury of Crittenden; brothers, Wayne Noel and Stanley Richard Noel, both of Glencoe; and nine grandchildren.

Jerry Nolen, 82, of Hebron, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired shipping department worker with Heekin Can Co. and a member of Florence First Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvania Nolen; a daughter, Rosemary Westmeyer of Hebron; a sister, Sophia Bailey of Manchester; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Britton Funeral Home, Manchester.

Cecil Pergram, 92, of Cynthiana, died Friday at his home. He was a retired mechanic. His wife, Jewell Adkins Pergram, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Michael Pergram and Ronald Jeffery Pergram, both of Harrison County; a daughter, Patsy Campbell of Harrison County; seven grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Dolores Pieschel, 88, of Covington, died at 12:21 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper with Schrage's Hardware and Gift Shop in Ludlow.
Her husband, Walter L. Pieschel, died in 1977.
Survivors include sons, Walter Pieschel Jr. of Walton, Paul Pieschel of Springboro, Ohio, R. Richard Pieschel and Daniel Pieschel, both of Edgewood, and Jerome Pieschel of Cincinnati; brothers, Bernard Schrage of Erlanger and James Schrage of Indianapolis; sisters, Marcella Schrage of Fort Wright and Virginia Cleary of Columbus, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

William Rauh, 78, of Hebron, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

William C. Schwierjohann, 86, of Silver Grove, died Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was a machinist with General Electric, a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Camp Springs, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Elizabeth Schwierjohann, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Carl Schwierjohann and William Schwierjohann, both of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Patricia Schwierjohann of Silver Grove; a sister, Rita Bittner of Cincinnati; a brother, Leo Schwierjohann of Highland Heights; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Camp Springs.

Betty Shepherd, 81, of Morrow, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopkinsville Church of Christ. A son, Bertis Arthur Shepherd, died in 1992. A daughter, Brenda Sue Soto, died in 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenna Salas of Morrow; and sons, Eddie Shepherd of Lucasville, Ohio, James Shepherd of Covington, Michael Shepherd of Oxford, Ga., Otis Shepherd of Florence and Roger Lee Shepherd of Happy; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Phyllis G. Trutschel, 75, of Alexandria, died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Ralph Trutschel, died Sept. 24 . A daughter, Carolyn Thiel, died in 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn E. Kenter of Alexandria; a half-sister, Lasie Miracle of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mitchell Turner, 50, of Bellevue, died Friday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was a driver with Norwood Sash and Door Co., Cincinnati.

Joseph A. Viel, 83, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a fabricator with R. A. Jones Co., a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Viel; daughters, Rosann Sharon of Dayton and Susan Viel of Highland Heights; a stepson, John Finck of Villa Hills; a stepdaughter, Diana Williams of Taylor Mill; a sister, Elaine Massey of Fort Thomas; and five grandchildren.
